If you are tracing a no-start or chasing a short in a Toyota Rav 4, the first thing you need is the factory Electrical Schematic. I have seen techs spend three hours guessing which wire feeds the fuel pump relay, then smoke a module because they misread a aftermarket drawing. Engine Control System (2GR-FE) Wiring
Pages 2 through 5 cover the entire engine control harness for the 2GR-FE. The ECU gets +B and +B2 from the EFI MAIN relay, and a separate 10A ETCS fuse powers the +BM circuit. The VVT sensors for bank 1 and bank 2—intake and exhaust—each have dedicated signal lines (VV1+, VV1–, VV2+, VV2–) that go straight to pins B45, B85, B44, B84. Miss one ground path and the variable valve timing throws a code that is a nightmare to diagnose without the pin references in this book.
Fuel Pump and Injector Circuits – What You Need
The fuel pump relay sits between the SK1 connector and the pump itself. Page 3 shows the circuit: +B and +B2 from the ECU energize the relay coil when the engine cranks. The fuel pump resistor (mounted near the tank) drops voltage at idle. If you are chasing a lean condition or a pump that runs constantly, check the FPR wire at the ECU pin FC. The injector wiring on page 4 lists each injector (No. 1 through No. 6) with its respective ECU pin—B59 for No. 6, B45 for No. 4, and so on. That level of detail is why OEM schematics are the only thing I trust. Aftermarket prints lump injectors together and you end up firing the wrong cylinder.
VVT Sensor Wiring: Bank 1 and Bank 2
Pages 4 and 5 map the VVT sensors with exact color codes. Bank 1 intake side ties to pin B52, exhaust to B51. Bank 2 intake at B36, exhaust at B35. The manual shows three-wire sensors: VC (5V reference), VV+, VV– (signal and ground). If your Rav 4 sets a P0012 or P0022, pull out this schematic and check continuity from the sensor connector back to the ECU. Nine times out of ten a rubbed-through wire at the cam cover causes it. You will find that ground path on page 5 under the Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve section.
Throttle Body and VSV Circuit – 3 Systems on One Page
Page 5 crams the throttle body assembly, the purge VSV, and the ACIS VSV into a single clean diagram. The throttle body has its own motor wires (M+, M–) and two position sensor signals (VTA1, VTA2) plus a 5V reference (VC). The VSV for air intake control uses pins ST1– and AICV. The purge VSV runs from the PRG line. I have used this page to solve a idle surge on a 2009 Rav 4: the ACIS VSV was stuck open because the ground at pin E2 had corrosion. Without the factory schematic, you would never know E2 is the common ground for all three VSVs.
