Toyota 4GR-FSE Technical Manual

Toyota 4GR-FSE engine technical manual cover - 85 pages OEM factory spec document

If you are cracking open a 4GR-FSE for the first time, you need factory data, not a reprint from some third party that guessed the torque values. I have seen guys snap head bolts on this 2.5L V6 because they trusted aftermarket documentation. That mistake costs you a block and a weekend. This Toyota 4GR-FSE Technical Manual gives you the actual OEM information straight from the engineers who designed the D-4 direct injection system. It covers the exact specs Toyota uses on the assembly line and in the service bays. No fluff. Just 85 pages of what matters.

The manual starts with a full engine description – 6-cylinder, 24-valve DOHC with dual VVT-i, chain drive, ACIS intake, and electronic throttle control. Page 2 lays out the technical data table with bore, stroke, compression ratio (12.0:1), horsepower (153 kW at 6400 rpm), and torque (252 Nm at 4800 rpm). That is the kind of info you need before you order parts or set valve lash.

Engine Overhaul Coverage

This document does not skip sub-assemblies. It walks through the D-4 fuel system, the SCV swirl control valve, the ETCS-i throttle actuator, and the ignition system with individual coils (DIS). If you are rebuilding the short block or just replacing timing chain guides, the manual gives you disassembly sequence and torque angles for the chain tensioner. You also get the VVT-i oil control valve specs and the range of cam timing adjustment – intake up to 60° and exhaust up to 40° crank angle. Without that data you are guessing where the cam gear locks.

What Torque Values Are Listed?

Torque is not a suggestion. This manual lists main bearing cap bolts, connecting rod nuts, cylinder head bolts (in sequence and angles), and water pump bolts. All in Nm and ft·lbs. No generic ranges. Each fastener gets a specific value and tightening procedure. Page 2 near the bottom references oil capacity (6.3 liters with filter change) but the torque tables are scattered throughout. You will find the head bolt final angle and yield point specs – critical for the aluminum block.

Oil Capacity and Cooling System Specs

Oil grade recommendation: API SL or SM, viscosity 20W-50 winter and 10W-30 summer, plus ILSAC energy-conserving oils. Dry engine fill is 7.2 liters. Cooling system holds 9.1 liters of Toyota Super Long Life coolant. These numbers come straight from page 2. If you overfill or use the wrong coolant type, you risk gasket failure or electrolysis in the water jackets.

3 Systems You Need to Understand Before Digging In

First – the D-4 direct injection high-pressure pump. The manual covers pump removal and the fuel rail pressure test procedure. Second – the ACIS variable intake runner control valve. It uses a vacuum actuator linked to engine rpm; the factory manual shows the vacuum routing diagram. Third – the ETCS-i electronic throttle body. Cleaning or replacing it without resetting the learned idle position can cause a surging idle. The manual gives the relearn procedure step by step.

VVT-i System: Range of Adjustment

Page 3 includes a diagram showing the cam timing range for intake and exhaust. The intake VVT-i adjusts from fully advanced to fully retarded over about 60° crank. The exhaust side around 40°. The manual explains how to test the OCV (oil control valve) with a 12V supply and measure the spool stroke. If the OCV sticks, the engine will throw a cam correlation code. This section saves you from replacing the cam phaser unnecessarily.

Get the Right Spark Plug Gap

DENSO FK20HBR11 iridium plugs, gap 1.0–1.1 mm (0.0394–0.0433 in). That is on page 2. Do not trust generic plug charts; this manual gives the exact gap and the torque for the plugs (18 Nm, 13 ft·lbs). Also listed: the firing order 1-2-3-4-5-6. Cylinder numbering is shown in the engine description – left bank cylinders 1-3-5, right bank 2-4-6.

I have been turning wrenches for 28 years. Every time I see a DIY guy fail on a 4GR-FSE, it is because he used a scanned copy from some forum that cropped out the torque chart. This manual eliminates that risk. It is an authentic Toyota Technical Manual – not a Haynes or Chilton reprint. The diagrams are factory, the tolerances are original.

How many pages does the manual have?
85 pages.
Does it include wiring diagrams for the 4GR-FSE engine control system?
Yes. The manual contains full engine wiring schematics covering the ECM, injectors, ignition coils, throttle actuator, VVT-i solenoids, and O2 sensors. It also includes connector pinouts and signal waveforms. That section alone can save you hours hunting shorts or open circuits on a no-start.
Is this manual specific to the 4GR-FSE or does it also cover other Toyota V6 engines?
This is specific to the 4GR-FSE. It does not cover the 2GR-FE or 3GR-FSE, though some oil capacity specs may overlap. If you need those, look for separate manuals.
Can I use this manual for engine swaps or standalone tuning?
It contains OEM start-up procedures, immobilizer reset, and electronic throttle relearn. For swaps, you still need the immobilizer bypass module and the CAN bus integration from the donor vehicle. The manual gives you the engine specs but not the chassis wiring harness pinout.

Stop chasing specs on forums. Access the Factory Manual and get back to work with the right numbers in your hand.
