You’ve got a 2001 Subaru IMPREZA in the bay with a 4EAT that’s slipping in 2nd gear. The aftermarket data you pulled says “tighten the low clutch piston retainer to 10 lb-ft.” That’s wrong. The factory training manual – this 36-page booklet – calls for a different procedure. Page 17 shows the oil pump service with the correct preload. Variable Torque Distribution (VTD): What It Is

This module (304) introduces VTD – the Variable Torque Distribution system inside the transfer clutch. If you’re used to the old push-button 4WD, the VTD works differently. It modulates torque split based on wheel speed and throttle. The manual dedicates a section to the mechanical differences between Phase I and Phase II VTD (page 9 in the slide sequence). You’ll see the actual spring locations and the check ball passages. Aftermarket documentation usually skips this. Then you wonder why the rear wheels lock up on dry pavement.

Does This Manual Cover the Hydraulic Control?

Yes, and it does it by gear. The hydraulic control chapter breaks down line pressure, lock-up engagement, lock-up release, and then each gear separately – 1st through 4th. Page 19 includes the low clutch timing control path. If you’re chasing a flare on the 2-3 shift, you need the line pressure table on page 21. That table is factory-measured at the regulator valve. 3 Sections You Need Before Touching the Valve Body

First, the disassembly sequence starting on page 7. It tells you which bolts come out first for the extension case. Second, the servo piston removal – that’s under “Servicing the Planetary Gear Assembly and Low Clutch” on page 19. Third, the oil pump service (page 17) with the exact parts that need replacement.
