Description
Mitsubishi 4D68 1992 Workshop Manual

If you are tearing down a Mitsubishi 4D68 diesel and relying on some third-party reprint for torque values, you are asking for trouble. I have seen cylinder heads warped and oil pans leaking because someone trusted a generic number. This 1992 Workshop Manual from Mitsubishi is 72 pages of factory specs – the same pages the dealer techs used. No guesswork.
Every spec here came out of the Mitsubishi engineering department in July 1992. The Engine sectional view, the lubrication system diagram, and the Fuel injection pump timing data – it is all original. You want to know the Torque for the main bearing cap bolts? Page 11B-1-5. You need the Camshaft end play clearance? That is on page 11B-9-1. Two pages, no filler, all factory tolerances.
Mitsubishi 4D68 Workshop Manual: The Specs That Matter
The table of contents reads like a checklist for a complete overhaul: GENERAL INFORMATION, SPECIFICATIONS, TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS, SEALANT. Then you get into the real work – DRIVE BELT AND GLOW PLUG, TIMING BELT, FUEL INJECTION PUMP AND INJECTION NOZZLES. If you are swapping injectors or setting pump timing, this is the data you need. The manual does not waste space on theory; it gives you the Valve clearance settings and the Cylinder head bolt sequence in one place.
Torque Specifications and Sealant: Where Most Repairs Fail
I have watched guys strip threads on a Crankshaft pulley bolt because they used a generic chart. This manual lists torque for every fastener on the 4D68 – from the rocker arm bolts to the flywheel bolts. It also specifies the exact sealant for the front case and oil pan. If you skip that step, you will have an oil leak inside 500 miles. The OEM torque table runs from page 11B-1-5, and the sealant section on page 11B-1-8 tells you which Mitsubishi part number to use.
Don’t trust aftermarket documentation on principle. I have seen aftermarket manuals omit the silent shaft alignment procedure. This factory manual covers FRONT CASE, SILENT SHAFTS AND OIL PAN – chapter 11. You get the oil pump relief valve spec and the silent shaft timing marks. Those details matter when you button up the bottom end.
Does This Manual Cover the Fuel Injection System?
Yes, and it covers it better than any third-party book. Chapter 5 is GLOW PLUGS, FUEL INJECTION PUMP AND INJECTION NOZZLES. You get removal and installation steps for the injection pump, nozzle opening pressure data, and the timing procedure for the 4D68 swirl chamber diesel. If you are chasing a hard-start or low-power complaint on a 1992 Mitsubishi diesel pickup, this section alone is worth the access.
Need the turbocharger removal steps? Chapter 7 has it – TURBOCHARGER. The wastegate actuator rod adjustment is in there. I have seen guys replace a turbo only to have it overshoot boost because they guessed the rod length. Factory data fixes that.
72 Pages of Verified Factory Torque Data
Let me be blunt: 72 pages may not sound like a lot, but every page in this manual carries weight. There are no wiring diagrams for the radio, no tire rotation charts. It is all engine – from the Rocker Arms to the Crankshaft. Chapter 9: ROCKER ARMS, ROCKER SHAFT AND CAMSHAFT gives you the camshaft journal clearance and the rocker arm shaft bolt torque. Chapter 10: CYLINDER HEAD, VALVES AND VALVE SPRINGS walks you through the valve spring installed height and the cylinder head bolt tightening sequence (three-stage torque, angle turn). If you do not have that sequence, you will crack the head.
If you are working on a later version of this engine, check out Mitsubishi 4D68 1996 Workshop Manual – 70 Pages of OEM Specs. For transmission work alongside the 4D68, the Mitsubishi R4AW2-1, R4AW2-3, R4AW2-7 1996 Workshop Manual is a companion. And for a different Mitsubishi diesel platform, see Mitsubishi F4A4 F4A5 1999 Workshop Manual – OEM Transmission Rebuild Specs.

Get the Right Camshaft End Play
One of the most skipped specs on the 4D68 is the camshaft end play. The manual lists it under ROCKER ARMS, ROCKER SHAFT AND CAMSHAFT. If you install a new camshaft without checking that clearance, you risk binding the timing belt at high RPM. The spec is 0.004 to 0.008 inches. That is not in the general “diesel engine” guides – it is specific to the 4D68. This manual has it.
- What years does this manual cover?
- It is the 1992 edition, specific to the Mitsubishi 4D68 engine. Earlier or later models may have different specs.
- Does this manual include torque specs for the head bolts?
- Yes. Torque specifications for cylinder head bolts, main bearing caps, and connecting rods are on page 11B-1-5.
- Is this manual for the turbo version?
- Yes. Chapter 7 covers the turbocharger removal, inspection, and wastegate adjustment. The manual applies to both naturally aspirated and turbocharged 4D68 variants, but all turbo-specific data is included.
- Can a beginner use this manual?
- If you have basic mechanical skills and a torque wrench, the step-by-step procedures are clear. However, this is a factory workshop manual – it assumes you know how to use a micrometer and interpret clearance specs. For a complete rebuild, you will also need the special tools listed in chapter 2.
If you want to rebuild this 4D68 without rounding bolts or chasing vacuum leaks, get the factory data. Access the Factory Manual.
