Mazda RX-7 1991 Wiring Diagram – Factory OEM Electrical Manual

1991 Mazda RX-7 Wiring Diagram - OEM Factory Manual cover

You have a 1991 Mazda RX-7 on the lift with an electrical gremlin. Maybe the intermittent wiper stops mid-sweep, or the ABS light won’t clear after a sensor swap. Without the factory wiring diagram, you’re tracing wires blind – and a misread pinout can fry a $400 ECU. I’ve been there. That’s why this Mazda RX-7 1991 Wiring Diagram from the OEM is sitting on my bench right now.

Aftermarket wiring diagrams are garbage for a rotary car. They lump all years together, skip the California fog light circuit, and guess at the color codes. This 143-page book came from Mazda Motor Corporation – printed in Japan, August 1990. It covers every wiring variation: coupe, convertible, turbo, non-turbo, air bag, no air bag, Federal, California, Canada. If your VIN falls in the ranges listed on page 4 (JM1FC3S1… etc.), this diagram matches your car.

Wiring Color Codes and Ground Points

Look at page 2. Every wire color has a code: Blue is L, Black is B, Brown is BR – you get the full list. The Ground Points section (Y) shows exactly where each ground bolt lives. I’ve seen guys chase a voltage drop through the whole harness only to find a corroded ground behind the passenger kick panel. That’s a 15-minute fix if you know where to look. The manual gives you the location diagrams, not a vague paragraph.

Turbo vs N/A Engine Control – What’s Different?

Two separate sections: N/A Engine Control and Turbo Engine Control. The turbo model adds the charge air bypass solenoid, knock sensor circuit, and fuel pump relay logic that the non-turbo doesn’t have. Page 73 (Turbo Engine Control) details the injector firing sequence and the ECU pinouts for the boost sensor. If you’re swapping a turbo engine into an N/A chassis, you need these exact schematics. The aftermarket manuals don’t separate them – they call it “engine control” and hope you guess.

Fuel Control System – Wire by Wire

Fuel Control covers the fuel pump, pressure regulator, and injector circuits. The coupe with turbo uses a different pump relay arrangement than the convertible without turbo. Page 26 (Fuel Control) shows the connector diagrams and routing for both. I’ve used this to diagnose a no-start on a customer’s RX-7 – turned out the fuel pump relay ground was open. The diagram showed me the path from the ECM to the relay coil. Took 20 minutes to find and fix. That’s $200 in labor saved.

ABS and Cruise Control – Factory Diagnostics

The ABS/Cruise Control section breaks it down: Coupe ABS, N/A Cruise (with and without air bag), Turbo Cruise. Each has its own schematic and connector view. Page 87 (Coupe ABS) lists the wheel speed sensor resistances and the ECU pin voltages at key positions. No need to guess if the ABS unit is bad – you can test the circuit end to end. Cruise control includes the clutch switch and brake switch inputs. One common problem: the hazard switch circuit interacts with the turn signals. The Turn/Hazard diagrams cover both with and without air bag.

Common Connectors and Parts Location

Pages 120-130 show the Common Connectors – all the multi-pin connectors in the car with cavity numbers, wire colors, and terminal sizes. The Parts Location (PL) section gives you photos of where each relay, fuse, and control unit sits. For a DIYer, this is gold. You don’t have to crawl under the dash with a flashlight guessing – you look at the diagram, identify connector X-03, go straight to the location index. Combine this with a Automotive Wiring guide for general splicing techniques, and you’re set. The Automotive Industry Overview may not help with a specific circuit, but this manual will.

3 Reasons to Choose OEM Documentation

First, the color codes are official. Mazda uses specific codes like DG (Dark Green) and LB (Light Blue). Aftermarket sources often misprint these. Second, the VIN splits are exact – you know which diagram fits your car. Third, the revision date is stamped: August 1990. No fluff, no generic “typical” diagrams – these are the actual sheets Mazda used on the assembly line. I’ve compared this to a third-party wiring manual for the same year; the third-party omitted the additional fan system entirely.

Does this manual cover the fuel injection system for the turbo model?
Yes. Turbo Engine Control section includes injector drive circuits, air flow meter, and boost sensor wiring.
I have a 1991 convertible with air bags. Will the diagrams match?
Yes. The manual has separate sub-sections for convertible without air bag and convertible with air bag – pages for Turn/Hazard, Audio, and Warning systems. The VIN range JM1FC3S1 MO 900001~ covers Federal & California convertible, air bag or not. The Air Bag Control System section (pages 108-115) gives the SRS wiring, diagnostic connector pins, and deployment circuit. You need to disable the system before probing – the manual warns you on page 110. Don’t skip that page.

After you run down the wiring with this document, check out related manuals for other years: Mazda RX-7 1994 Wiring Diagram, Mazda RX-7 1993 Service Manual, and Mazda RX-7 1993 Wiring Diagram – Factory OEM Electrical Manual. They follow the same format – no guessing, just factory data.

Access the Factory Manual now and get the wire colors, connector pinouts, and ground locations you can trust. No trips to the junkyard to peek at someone else’s harness. No chasing ghosts.
