If you’re staring at a pile of rotor housings, apex seals, and an eccentric shaft that looks like it’s been through a war, you need the actual factory documentation. Not a photocopy of a copy. Not a third-party rewrite that guesses at the tension bolt torque. The Mazda RX-4 Workshop Manual in front of you is the same 212-page book that Mazda issued to their own dealers. I’ve been twisting wrenches for 28 years, and I’ve seen guys snap tension bolts because they used a generic torque value from a forum. That mistake costs you an engine. Rotary engines don’t forgive guesswork. The apex seal clearance, the side housing regrind limits, the eccentric shaft end play – every number in this book came off the factory floor. Before you pull a single bolt, you need the disassembly sequence from Section 1-A. The manual lists each fastener, each seal, each spring in the order they come off. No skipping steps. No “remove remaining components” vagueness.

Engine Disassembly: More Than Just Unbolting

Section 1-A starts on page 1:4 and walks through the entire teardown. The exploded view on Fig. 1-1 labels 42 parts – from the cooling fan to the timer bolts. You’ll see exactly where the oil seal retainers sit and how the eccentric shaft pulley boss indexes. I tell every junior tech: lay the parts out in the order the manual shows. That exploded view is your map. Miss a sealing rubber (inner or outer) and you’ll have a coolant leak that’ll make you pull the engine again.

The manual also lists special tools needed for disassembly. Page 1:25 has the complete special tools table. Don’t try to pry the stationary gear off with a screwdriver. Inspection and Repair: The Rotor and Apex Seal Gauntlet

Section 1-B covers inspection and repair across 14 sub-sections. You’ll work through everything from inspecting the front, intermediate, and rear housing (1-B-1) to regrinding side housings (1-B-2). The specification for side housing flatness is given in thousandths of an inch. Page 1:9 lists the allowable runout. If you’re over that, you either machine it or replace it. Don’t try to “shim” a warped housing – the oil seals won’t hold.

Apex seal inspection (1-B-10) is where most DIY guys get into trouble. The manual tells you the clearance limits between the apex seal and the rotor slot. Use a feeler gauge, not your eyeball. Rotor oil seal (1-B-9) inspection requires measuring the seal lip profile. The factory procedure uses a micrometer and a go/no-go gauge.

Engine Assembly: Tension Bolt Torque Matters

Section 1-C is the meat – 18 steps from installing the oil seal to mounting the alternator and air pump. Step 1-C-9 is Tightening Tension Bolts. This is not a “tighten until it feels right” operation. The manual specifies a sequence and a torque value in foot-pounds. You need a torque wrench that’s calibrated within the last year. Do the sequence in three passes. Back off if you overshoot – don’t back off if you undershoot? No, follow the procedure: tighten to the first stage, then second, then final. The manual gives the exact angle for each pass.

Installing the eccentric shaft (1-C-4) requires checking end play after you torque the rear housing (1-C-8). Page 1:21 shows the adjustment shim selection. If you skip this step, the shaft will walk and chew up the main bearings. I’ve seen it happen on a 13B that a customer “rebuilt” with a haynes manual. Don’t be that guy.

Why OEM Factory Specs Beat Aftermarket Reprints

Every aftermarket manual I’ve seen for the RX-4 gets at least one torque value wrong. The factory manual uses the original Mazda engineering data. The differences are small – maybe 5 ft-lbs on a tension bolt – but 5 ft-lbs on a rotary engine can distort the rotor housing. The OEM manual also includes the inspection limits for components like the needle bearing (1-B-14). Aftermarket reprints often skip those limits entirely, assuming you’ll just replace anything worn. But on a budget build, knowing the minimum acceptable clearance saves you from replacing parts that are still in spec.
