Kubota U-10, U-15, U-20, U-35, U-45 Operators Manual – Factory Maintenance Guide

Kubota U-20 excavator with Operators Manual open to engine oil section, 32-page OEM booklet

If you own a Kubota mini excavator from the U series, you’ve got a machine that’ll outlast you if you keep the oil clean and the grease points fed. But skipping steps — using the wrong hydraulic fluid, over-tightening a track adjuster — that’s how you turn a $30,000 machine into a parts donor. This 32-page Kubota U-10, U-15, U-20, U-35, U-45 Operators Manual is the factory document Kubota ships with those models. Not a third-party reprint. Not a generic guide. It tells you exactly what to check and when, with illustrations from the actual factory.

Kubota U-10, U-15, U-20, U-35, U-45 Operators Manual – The TOC Breakdown

Flip to the table of contents and you’ll see three main sections: Engine, Hydraulic System, and Machine Body & Attachment. The engine section covers oil changes (page 3-F), coolant checks, radiator cleaning, fan belt tension (page 7-P,i), air cleaner element, fuel filter, water separator, fuel hose, battery, and wire harness & fuses. That’s the stuff that keeps the machine starting and running. The hydraulic system gets its own section (pages 15-20) with hydraulic oil, return and suction filters, travel reduction case gear oil, pilot filter, and pilot valve screen cleaning. Then the body section covers front greasing points, track tension adjustment, bucket teeth, and torque checks on bolts for muffler, ROPS/FOPS/cab/canopy.

That’s it. No fluff. No theory. Just the routine maintenance schedule and the right way to do each task. If you’ve ever had a fuel filter clog because you didn’t bleed the system correctly, you’ll appreciate the drawings that show the bleed port location.

Engine Oil and Coolant: The Two Things That Kill Engines First

The manual doesn’t assume you’ve changed oil before. It walks you through the drain plug location, the fill cap, and the dipstick check — all specific to the Kubota D series engines used in these machines. Page 3-F shows the cooler and coolant level together because low coolant overheats the oil. And if you ignore fan belt tension (page 7-P,i), the water pump stops circulating, and you get a cracked head. I’ve seen it. Torque specs for the drain plug aren’t listed in an operator manual, but the interval schedules are: every 50 hours for initial oil change, then every 250 after that. Follow that and the Engine will outlive your need to sell it.

Speaking of engine work, if you’re also maintaining a compact tractor, the Kubota L3200 L3800 2012 Operators Manual – OEM Specs has similar engine service intervals for the L series.

Fuel System: Water Separator and Filter Replacement Intervals

Diesel fuel in Texas picks up condensation fast. The manual tells you to drain the water separator (page 9-P,i) every 10 hours during wet conditions and replace the fuel filter every 200 hours. The drawing shows which valve to open and which way to turn the filter. Don’t guess — one wrong direction and you introduce air. The Fuel section also covers the fuel hose replacement interval (page 11-P,i) and the bleeding procedure. A related guide for larger machines is the Kubota KX057-4, U55-4, U48-4 2010 Operators Manual – OEM Specs, which follows the same logic but with different part numbers.

Hydraulic System Maintenance – Why Factory Specs Matter

Hydraulic oil is the blood of an excavator. The manual specifies the oil type and capacity for each model (pages 15-16). It also shows the return filter and suction filter locations — two different filters with different part numbers. Swap them and you restrict flow. The travel reduction case gear oil (pages 17-18) uses a grade similar to what you’d find in a Manual Transmission, but don’t use auto transmission fluid. The Kubota manual says 80W-90 gear oil for the case. And the pilot filter (page 17-18) gets replaced every 500 hours. If you ignore the pilot valve screen cleaning (pages 19-20), the control levers get stiff and the machine jerks. I’ve fixed that mistake more than once.

But unlike a car Manual Transmission, the travel reduction case on these excavators also shares oil with the final drive — the manual shows the combined fill and drain plug. Miss that detail and you’ll overfill the hydraulic system.

Track Tension Adjustment: Don’t Guess, Use the Procedure

Track tension on a U-35 or U-45 is critical. Too tight and you wear out the sprocket; too loose and the track derails on uneven ground. Pages 23-24 show the grease fitting, the relief valve, and the proper sag measurement. The manual specifies using a straightedge and measuring deflection — not the “tighten until it sounds good” method. Also, the bolt torque check for the muffler and ROPS mounts (pages 25-26) is listed with a torque range. That’s not in aftermarket copies. This is OEM data direct from Kubota’s engineering department.

If you’re stepping up to a larger frame, the Kubota L3540 L5240 L5740 L3240 2011 Operators Manual – OEM Specs covers tractor track maintenance on rubber-track models.

Does This Manual Cover the U-35 and U-45 Electrical System?

Partially. The wire harness and fuses section (page 13-P,i) shows the fuse box layout and how to inspect for chafing or corrosion. It does not include wiring diagrams or ECU pinouts. This is an operator manual, not a service manual. For electrical troubleshooting beyond fuse replacement, you’d need the full shop manual. But for daily checks — battery terminals, fuse condition, and harness routing — this covers what the dealer expects you to check before you call them.

32 Pages of Real Maintenance Instructions

Thirty-two pages doesn’t sound like much until you realize each page covers one critical system with clear drawings and callouts. The font is readable, the binding survives grease, and the PDF format means you can print a copy for the toolbox and keep a clean one on your phone. This is the same document Kubota dealers print out for customers who ask, “How often do I change the air cleaner?” It’s their official answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this manual for the U-35 model?
Yes, the manual covers U-10, U-15, U-20, U-35, and U-45 models.
Is there a wiring diagram in this manual?
No. This is an operator manual, not a service or repair manual. It covers routine maintenance: engine oil changes, coolant checks, fuel filter replacement, hydraulic oil and filter service, track tension adjustment, and greasing points. The table of contents shows wire harness and fuses on page 13, but that section is for visual inspection and fuse replacement, not detailed wiring diagrams. For electrical troubleshooting you’d need the full service manual for your specific model. Stick with this manual for daily upkeep.

If you need to keep your U-series excavator running like it left the factory floor, get the actual maintenance schedule and procedures from the source. Access the Factory Manual from AutoRepairManuals – it’s the same 32-page booklet Kubota delivered with the machine.
