Description

Komatsu D355C-3 1996 Workshop Manual

If you’re turning wrenches on a D355C-3 dozer, you need the real factory documentation. I’ve been in this trade 28 years, and I’ve seen what happens when guys use aftermarket junk or try to wing it. This 516-page manual is what Komatsu shipped to dealers in 1996. It covers serial numbers 5416 and up. Use it.

The Komatsu D355C-3 1996 Workshop Manual is the only document you should trust for engine rebuilds, powertrain overhauls, and hydraulic troubleshooting. Don’t bother with a third-party reprint that mashed together broken English and missing pages. This is the original.

Komatsu D355C-3 1996 Workshop Manual cover - OEM factory service manual for dozer

01 General: Serial Numbers and Lubricant Tables

Section 01 starts with the basics: general view, specification, general assembly drawing, lifting performance curve, engine specification, weight table, and the table of lubricant and water quantity. It also tells you where to find the serial numbers on the engine and tractor. Before you order any parts or drain any fluids, check the serial number location. The manual lists the exact lubricant capacities in imperial gallons. Don’t guess — use the table.

Komatsu D355C-3 1996 Workshop Manual: Engine Disassembly and Assembly

The engine section is split into three parts: Structure and Function (11), Testing and Adjusting (12), and Disassembly and Assembly (13). Standard values for inspection and adjustment sit on page 12-1. I’ve seen guys try to fudge those numbers with aftermarket specs — don’t be that guy. The disassembly section walks you through removing the fan belt, alternator, turbocharger, fuel injection pump, water pump, nozzle holder, cylinder head, radiator, torque-converter oil cooler, starting motor, engine oil cooler, and the complete engine assembly. Each step has a required tool list and safety warnings. Mounting instructions are given in reverse order with torque specs.

Skip the guesswork.

Power Train: Torqflow Transmission and Steering Brakes

Power train coverage begins with structure and function (21), showing the power train diagram, hydraulic circuit diagram, and details on the Torqflow hydraulic, bevel gear shaft, steering clutches, steering brakes, and final drive. Testing and adjusting (22) covers oil pressure and temperature tests, pedal and lever travel adjustments, and operating force tests. The standard value table is critical — if you miss a pressure spec, the clutches slip. Disassembly and assembly (23) includes the torque converter, transmission pump, floor frame, transmission control valve, and steering control valve. Use the step-by-step procedures, not a generic Manual Transmission guide.

Undercarriage and Hydraulic System: What’s Covered

The undercarriage sections (31–34) cover structure, function, disassembly, assembly, and maintenance standards. You’ll find track adjustment specs and final drive procedures. The hydraulic system (61–64) is equally thorough: structure and function, testing and adjusting (62) with pressure checks, disassembly and assembly (63), and a maintenance standard table on page 24-1. Don’t confuse this with a standard Manual Transmission overhaul — the hydraulic system on this dozer is complex, and the manual gives you the exact port pressures and relief valve settings.

3 Reasons to Choose OEM Factory Documents

First, aftermarket manuals often leave out critical notes like the mounting sequence for the cylinder head or the correct lubricant viscosity for your climate. Second, this manual includes the actual table of contents from Komatsu — every page number matches the original binder. Third, the wiring diagram in section 90 is factory-accurate. If you trust an aftermarket compilation, you risk stripping threads or misdiagnosing a fault. The Komatsu D355C-3 Pipelayer Operation & Maintenance Manual covers the operation side; this workshop manual covers the repair side. FAQ

Does this manual include torque specs for the cylinder head?
Yes, see section 12 Testing and Adjusting.
Is this the factory manual or a reprint?
This is the original OEM shop manual printed by Komatsu in Japan. It’s not a reprint or a scanned copy of a photocopy. The file is a direct scan of the original manual. Aftermarket manuals often omit critical notes like the specific sequence for mounting the cylinder head or the correct lubricant quantities. This manual includes the table of lubricant and water quantity, location of serial numbers, and factory torque values. You won’t find that in a generic guide.
Do I need special tools for the Torqflow transmission?
Yes. The manual lists required tools in each disassembly section. For the torque converter, you’ll need a puller set and seal drivers. The manual gives step-by-step with part numbers. Don’t skip the tool list if you want to avoid damaging the seals.
Does this cover the undercarriage?
Yes, sections 31-34 cover structure, disassembly, and maintenance standards.
