Description

Komatsu 12V170-1 2005 Workshop Manual

You have a Komatsu 12V170-1 on the stand and someone hands you a printout from some forum with torque values that look typed in by a guy who guessed. I have seen cylinder heads come back because the bolt stretch was off. That is why you want the 2005 Workshop Manual from Komatsu itself. This is the same book the dealer techs used when this engine was current. 321 pages of the actual factory procedure, not a summary written by a marketing person. If you have ever rebuilt a V12 industrial diesel, you know that one wrong clearance on the valve train or a misread fuel injection timing spec can cost you a weekend. This manual stops that.

Komatsu 12V170-1 2005 Workshop Manual cover and table of contents

12V170-1 Engine: What This Factory Manual Covers

The manual is split into six sections starting with General specs (engine performance curves, weight table) and then Structure and Function. That second chapter is where you will live if you are unfamiliar with this engine. It goes through the intake and exhaust system (after-cooler, turbocharger), then the engine body: cylinder head, valve system, cylinder block, timing gear, flywheel. Each component has an exploded diagram. The lubrication system section includes the oil pump, oil cooler bypass valve, and piston cooling valve – a detail aftermarket manuals leave out. The cooling system chapter covers the water pump, fan drive, corrosion resistor, thermostat. If you need to understand how the coolant flows before you pull the water pump, the chart on page 11-43 is your map.

Fuel System Diagnostics

Fuel injection on a V12 is not something you guess. The manual dedicates a full subsection to the fuel system: injection pump, feed pump, injection nozzle, automatic timer, fuel solenoid, and the engine stop motor. You get the calibration data for the injection pump and the procedure for adjusting the rack linkage. For testing, you need the fuel injection timing procedure. I have seen mechanics set timing by feel on engines like this and then wonder why it knocks. Page 12-15 gives the exact method for checking and adjusting fuel injection timing. The required tool list is in the Testing and Adjusting chapter – do not start without verifying you have a dial indicator and the adapter.

Valve Clearance Adjustments

Valve clearance on a 12V170-1 is not a quick job. The manual tells you the sequence and the feeler gauge thickness. It also covers adjusting the crosshead guide and rocker arm shaft. Most aftermarket guides skip the crosshead guide step – that leads to uneven wear. The Maintenance Standard chapter (page 14-1) lists the service limits for valves, valve guides, and seats. If you are replacing valve seat inserts, the Repair and Replacement section (chapter 15) gives the press fit specs.

Cooling System Checks

The cooling system section in the Testing and Adjusting chapter includes belt tension checks for the fan and alternator. Overheating is one of the most common issues on these engines when they are pushed hard. The troubleshooting chart for overheating (S-14) walks you through thermostat operation, water pump condition, and coolant level. The corrosion resistor is a part that many shops replace without testing – the manual tells you how to check it. Torque specs for the water pump mounting bolts are not something you find in a generic manual. You get them here.

OEM Specs vs Aftermarket Data

I have had techs bring me aftermarket reprints that claim to cover the 12V170-1. They never have the right main bearing cap torque or the injection pump calibration data. This manual came from Komatsu directly. The table of revisions on page 00-2-1 shows that the document is a controlled publication with revision marks. That is the difference between a manual that gets you a running engine and one that gets you a call to the customer explaining why the rebuild has to come apart again. If you want a reference for the Komatsu 12V170-1 Series Engine 1999 Workshop Manual”>Komatsu 12V170-1 Series Engine 1999 Workshop Manual, we have that too, but the 2005 version includes updated calibration data and troubleshooting procedures that the earlier edition lacked.

What the Troubleshooting Section Covers

The troubleshooting chapter has 16 symptom charts. S-2 alone breaks down “Engine does not start” into three subcases: engine does not turn, engine turns but no exhaust gas, exhaust smoke but no start. That level of detail is what saves you from chasing the wrong circuit. The chart for excessive fuel consumption (S-10) includes injection timing and compression pressure checks. The blow-by measurement procedure is under Engine Body in the Testing chapter. Page 12-101 starts the troubleshooting section. If you are using a generic troubleshooting guide from the internet, you are missing the specific Komatsu fault codes and the factory-recommended diagnostic sequence.

Repair and Replacement of Parts

Chapter 15 is for the jobs that require special tools. It begins with a table of special tools and part numbers. Then it goes through cylinder head pressure test, replacing valve seat inserts, replacing nozzle holder sleeves, valve guide replacement, crosshead guide replacement, and crankshaft grinding specs. The grinding limits for the crankshaft journal are given with tolerances. If you are rebuilding the bottom end, you need the connecting rod small end bushing replacement procedure – it is there. The manual covers the main bearing cap replacement, which on this engine requires line boring alignment. Do not attempt that without the factory procedure.

If you are working on a vehicle with a Manual Transmission”>Manual Transmission, you will need a separate transmission manual. For this engine, the manual covers the flywheel and flywheel housing, but not the gearbox. Another resource is the Manual Transmission”>Manual Transmission section on our site for related drivetrain documentation.

Does this manual cover the fuel injection pump calibration data?
Yes. The Testing and Adjusting chapter includes fuel injection pump calibration data and the rack linkage adjustment procedure. See the data on page 12-18-1.
Are the torque values in foot-pounds or Newton-meters?
Both. The Maintenance Standard chapter lists torque specs in both units. For example, the cylinder head bolt torque is given in both N·m and ft·lb. The manual assumes you have a torque wrench that reads either – just pay attention to which column you are reading. If you use the wrong unit you will strip threads. The specification table on page 14-1 includes the values for the main bearing cap and connecting rod nuts.
Does it include the wiring diagram for the engine stop motor?
Yes, the Structure and Function chapter includes the electrical schematic for the fuel solenoid and engine stop motor. The wiring is part of the fuel system diagram.
What about the turbocharger service limits?
The Maintenance Standard section covers turbocharger wear limits, but the manual does not include a full turbo rebuild procedure. It gives the inspection points and clearance checks. If you need to rebuild the turbo, you will need a separate turbo manual.

When you have the engine apart and you are standing there with a torque wrench, having the factory page open is the difference between a first-run start and a come-back. Access the Factory Manual and keep it on your tablet or printed out. Your future self will thank you when the engine fires and stays running.
