Kia SPORTAGE Repair Manual – Factory Specs You Can Trust

I’ve worked on enough Sportages to know that aftermarket manuals get the torque wrong on the water pump every time. That said, the raw data here is identical to what Kia dealer techs used in North America.

Gasoline Engines FE SOHC and DOHC: Mechanical Section

This chapter covers the 2.0L injection engines – both SOHC and DOHC variants. Starts with engine characteristics and a proper fault-finding table (page 11). Then it walks through in-car adjustments, engine removal, full teardown, inspection specs, reassembly, and reinstallation. The step order is exactly what the factory line expects. No skipping the oil pump clearance check before buttoning up. I’ve seen shops that ignore the main bearing clearance spec and end up with a knock at 50k miles. This manual has the limits – you just have to read them.

Cooling System for Gas and Diesel: Don’t Ignore the Radiator Cap

The cooling chapters are separate for gas and diesel, because the diesel HW motor runs a different water pump and fan hub assembly. Page 67 details the radiator cap pressure test – 1.1 bar for gas, 0.9 for diesel. That little difference will cause a leak if you swap caps. The fan clutch bearing unit is covered on page 68. That page alone is worth the price if you’ve ever snapped a bolt because the aftermarket book said 80 N·m when the factory calls for 55. The manual also includes a complete maintenance schedule table (page 8) with intervals for every fluid and filter. It’s not a suggestion – it’s the warranty spec.

Is the manual completely in Russian? Can I still use it?

Yes, the text is Russian, but the tables, diagrams, and torque numbers are universal. I use it on my bench with no issues.

Does this manual cover the 2.0L diesel engine and the ECU self-diagnosis?

It covers both the diesel HW engine (mechanical section starts page 83) and the gasoline FE engines. The electronic engine management chapter (page 71) includes self-diagnosis procedures, voltage tables, pinouts for the ECU, and the emission system component checks. If you need to pull fault codes without a scan tool, the manual shows you how to use the diagnostic connector under the dash. It also covers the timing belt replacement for the diesel – that’s a critical job because the HW engine is an interference design. The manual gives the belt tension spec and the pump timing procedure from the Bosch VE injection pump.
