Gear ratios: 1st 2.266 (43/15), 2nd 1.529 (26/17), 3rd 1.181 (26/22), 4th 0.954 (21/22), 5th 0.791 (19/24). Final drive chain reduction 2.866 (43/15), overall drive ratio 5.157 at top gear. These numbers are what you need when you’re replacing a countershaft sprocket and the parts catalog gives you three options. The manual tells you which one actually fits the KLX650-C1. Engine Specs – Bore, Stroke, and Compression Ratio
Engine is a 4-stroke DOHC single-cylinder, liquid-cooled. Bore and stroke 100.0 x 83.0 mm, displacement 651 mL, compression ratio 9.5:1. Maximum horsepower 33 kW (45 ps) at 6,500 rpm (varies per country). Maximum torque 53 N·m (39.1 ft·lb) at 5,000 rpm. Carburetion is a Keihin CVK40. Starting system is electric starter, ignition is CDI with electronically advanced timing: 5° BTDC at 1,300 rpm to 31° BTDC at 3,000 rpm. Spark plug NGK DPR8EA-9 or ND X24EPR-U9. Valve timing inlet opens 17° BTDC, closes 260° later; exhaust opens 53° BBDC, closes 274° ATDC. Lubrication system is forced wet sump, oil grade SE or SF, viscosity SAE 10W-40 to 20W-50, capacity 2.1 L (2.2 quarts). If you’re rebuilding the top end, these valve timing numbers are the baseline. Aftermarket manuals often round them off. This one doesn’t.
Engine Oil and Filter Replacement – Page 4 Warning
Page 4 carries a warning: insufficient or contaminated oil causes accelerated wear and may result in engine seizure. The manual then gives the procedure for oil change and filter replacement. Capacity is 2.1 L with filter change. Filter part number is [DATA NEEDED] – you’ll find it in the parts supplement. The warning is there because the KLX650-C1 runs a wet sump and the oil pump is driven off the crank. Skip the change interval and you’re looking at a cam journal replacement. The manual specifies torque for the drain plug and filter cover. I’ve seen stripped threads from someone using a 3/8” ratchet instead of a torque wrench. Don’t be that guy.
