Exhaust valve clearance diesel 0.022-inch, gasoline 0.018-inch. Slow idle diesel 600 rpm, gasoline 800 rpm. If you’re setting valves on a JD400 and you don’t have these numbers from the OEM manual, you’re guessing – and I’ve seen bent pushrods from that guesswork. The electrical section tells you battery terminal is grounded negative, specific gravity at full charge corrected to 80°F. That’s the kind of detail you only get from the source.

Are You Using the Right Lubricants?

The Fuels and Lubricants chapter starts on page 37. John Deere specifies particular oil grades and hydraulic fluids for the JD400. The closed center hydraulic system on this machine won’t tolerate the wrong viscosity. I’ve had guys bring me loaders with foaming hydraulic oil because they used universal tractor fluid instead of the recommended type. The OEM table in the manual gives you the straight dope. 2 Common Mistakes When Operating a JD400

Mistake 1: Ignoring the slow idle spec. Running a cold diesel at 600 rpm idle is a warm-up, not a working speed. The manual tells you the working speed range – use it. Lugging the engine because you don’t know the rpm band costs you torque and fuel.
Mistake 2: Not using the differential lock correctly. The JD400 has a hand or foot operated mechanical lock that springs out of engagement. Page 9 (travel speeds chart) helps you know when to lock it. Use it wrong and you’ll spin a tire in mud or break an axle shaft. Trouble Shooting – Why the Factory Procedure Matters

The Trouble Shooting chapter on page 71 is not a general guide. It lists symptoms and factory-prescribed fixes for the JD400. For example, if the engine won’t start, the manual walks you through fuel system checks in the order John Deere intended. Skip that order and you might replace a starter when the problem is a plugged fuel filter. Does this manual cover both diesel and gasoline engines?

Yes, page 3 has separate columns for diesel and gasoline – flywheel horsepower, bore/stroke, compression ratio, valve clearances, and idle speeds.
