Description
John Deere 316, 318, 420 1995 Service Manual – OEM Factory Documentation

If you’ve ever tried to rebuild a hydrostatic transmission using a generic online PDF that claims universal specs, you know the frustration: bolts strip, charge pressure is off, and you waste a day chasing the wrong numbers. That’s why I keep the factory John Deere 316, 318, 420 1995 Service Manual on my bench. 440 pages of the actual documentation John Deere issued to its dealers. No reprints, no aftermarket guesses. This is the TM1590 manual, printed in May 1995 by John Deere Horicon Works.
Section 10 – Safety and General Specs
Section 10 opens with 26 safety warnings covering everything from battery explosion prevention to high-pressure fluid injection. The manual doesn’t assume you know where the pinch points are – it shows you. After that you get machine specifications, repair specs, and the factory-recommended torque values for metric and unified inch bolts. The torque tables are specific to the 316, 318, and 420, not a generic chart pulled from some database.
Torque Values and Repair Specs: What’s on Page 1
The repair specifications group includes metric cap screw torque values for Grade 7 fasteners, plus service recommendations for O-ring boss fittings, flat face O-ring seal fittings, and 37° flare connectors. Need the charge pressure for the hydrostatic transmission? Those test and adjustment specs are in the same section. You won’t find a single “refer to a separate manual” when it comes to the critical numbers – John Deere puts them all in one place.
Does This Manual Cover the Onan Engine?
Section 20 – Engine Repair says clearly: “ONAN ENGINE REPAIR—USE CTM2” for internal work like pistons, rings, and valve jobs. But the removal and installation procedure for the entire engine is here. If you’re swapping an engine or pulling it to access the transmission, you don’t need the CTM2. The manual gives you the steps, the lift points, and the bracket hardware details. For the 420 with the 20 HP Onan, that’s a heavy lump – you need the right procedure so you don’t bend a cooling shroud or snap a mount.
Three Reasons to Trust OEM Documentation Over Aftermarket
Reason one: the torque specs. I’ve had customers bring me tractors that were rebuilt using aftermarket manuals that listed the wrong foot-pounds for the head bolts. On an Onan engine, that’s a blown head gasket waiting to happen. This manual gives you the exact metric and unified inch bolt torque values from John Deere’s engineering department. Reason two: the safety section alone – 26 separate warnings that cover everything from battery explosion prevention to high-pressure fluid injection hazards. That’s not fluff; that’s the difference between walking out of the shop and being carried out. Reason three: the diagnostic flow charts in Sections 220 through 270 are not generic. They were written for these specific tractors, with tree-branch questions that take you step by step through fuel system, electrical, and hydraulic faults. You can’t get that from a Haynes manual.
Power Train Repair: Transmission and Linkage Procedures
Section 50 covers the transmission, charge pump, implement relief valve, and the control linkage. There are four versions of the transmission control linkage inspection and repair – version two is specific to the 316 and 318, while the 420 gets its own version two and a separate differential lock and two-speed control linkage procedure. If you’re chasing a hydro creep issue, the charge pump removal and assembly steps are photographed and documented with clear disassembly sequences.
Understanding the hydrostatic transmission theory in Section 250 requires knowing how a Manual Transmission differs from a hydraulic drive. The manual explains the theory of operation for the power train before you get into diagnosis. That background matters when you’re trying to figure out why the tractor won’t move under load.
For more engine internal specs on the Onan, see the companion CTM2 manual. If you need diesel engine repair for a different machine, the John Deere 4039D 4039TL 4045DF 2003 Service Manual | OEM Specs covers a different platform. Later model self-propelled mowers like the John Deere SP458 2006 Service Manual – 1131 Pages of Factory Specs have their own documentation. For vintage garden tractors, check the John Deere 110 112 1969 Service Manual.
Electrical and Hydraulic Diagnostic Sections
Section 240 gives you electrical schematics, component locations, and system operation. Section 270 covers hydraulic schematics and theory. These are the maps you need when the front PTO clutch won’t engage or the three-point hitch drifts down. The front PTO clutch removal and installation is in Section 40 – disassemble, inspect, and reassemble with the correct shim clearances.
The differential lock linkage on the 420 is similar to some light truck Manual Transmission shift mechanisms. Knowing how the mechanical engagement works helps you adjust the cable correctly.
That’s the difference between a factory manual and a photocopy.
Access the Factory Manual and get the genuine documentation John Deere technicians used. 440 pages, OEM torque specs, safety warnings, and diagnostic flow charts – all built for the 316, 318, and 420 lawn and garden tractors.
- Does this manual cover the mower deck?
- No. Mower deck gear case repair is in Section 80, but blade and spindle info is limited.
- Can I use this manual for the 420 diesel model?
- Yes. The manual covers the 420 alongside the 316 and 318. The 420 has a two-speed transmission and differential lock linkage unique to that model – Section 50 covers those procedures in detail. Also the steering section has separate groups for 316 and for 318/420. Pay attention to which group you’re referencing. The hydraulic control valve section applies to all three. If you’re working on a 420 with the Onan engine, you’ll need CTM2 for engine internal specs, but the remove-and-install steps are here.
