Description
Jeep KJ Service Manual
You’ve got a Jeep KJ on the lift – maybe a Liberty – and you’re chasing a clunk in the front suspension or a slow oil leak. Without the factory book, you’re flipping through forums, guessing on torque, and hoping the aftermarket diagram is right. That costs time and parts. This is the actual Jeep KJ Service Manual, 2033 pages of what the dealer technicians used. It covers the 2.4L and 3.7L engines, the NV231 and NV242 transfer cases, and every damn nut and bolt the factory specified.

Torque References: Why the Manual’s Numbers Matter
Inside the introduction, there’s a whole section called TORQUE REFERENCES. Page 7 in the PDF – but don’t get hung up on page numbers. The manual tells you exactly which fastener goes where. SAE grade 5 vs grade 8, metric class 9.8 vs 10.9. It even shows the line marks on bolt heads. Aftermarket manuals leave this out. They say “tighten securely.” That’s how you snap a control arm bolt or strip an M10 in the knuckle. The OEM spec is right here. Fastener USAGE has a warning – I’m reading it: “USE OF AN INCORRECT FASTENER MAY RESULT IN COMPONENT DAMAGE OR PERSONAL INJURY.” They don’t mess around. Neither should you.
Fastener Usage – What the Aftermarket Manuals Skip
The FASTENER USAGE section goes into fastener strength grades, thread repair, and metric identification. It tells you to salvage fasteners if they’re not damaged. Most of the time, you can reuse a bolt if the threads are clean and it’s not stretched. But how do you know if it’s stretched? The manual explains the torque-to-yield stuff for certain applications. You won’t find that in a Haynes or Chilton. Those reprints cut corners. This is original factory documentation. For related models, check the 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty KJ Service Manual if you need a year-specific version.
7 Fluid Systems Covered in the Lubrication & Maintenance Section
Section 0 – LUBRICATION & MAINTENANCE – is 57 pages alone. It covers fluid types for the engine, transmission (manual and automatic), transfer case (NV231 and NV242), axles, and cooling system. Each one has SAE viscosity ratings, API quality classifications, and OEM part numbers. The FLUID CAPACITIES table gives you exact quarts, including the transfer case and differentials. You need to know the difference between the NV231 and NV242 fill plugs? It’s in there. If you’re doing a full service on a KJ, this section pays for itself the first time you don’t overfill the front diff. For a more complete bundle, see the Jeep KJ Service Manual – 2401 Pages of Factory Torque Specs & Procedures.
Suspension Torque Charts: Front and Rear
Under section 2 – SUSPENSION – there are separate torque charts for the front and rear suspension. Front suspension torque specs include the upper and lower control arms, shock bolts, stabilizer bar links, and the hub/bearing assembly. Rear suspension torque chart covers the shock, spring, jounce bumper, stabilizer bar, and upper ball joint. Every torque value is in ft-lbs with the metric equivalent. The manual also has a DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING procedure for the lower ball joint. Shops bill hours for that diagnosis. You can do it in fifteen minutes with the factory procedure and a dial indicator.
Now, about aftermarket vs OEM. I’ve seen aftermarket manuals claim to cover the Jeep KJ – but they miss the VTEC system? No, KJ doesn’t have VTEC, but you get the point. They omit the VECI label information, the vehicle identification number breakdown, and the safety certification label specs. This manual includes all of that in the introduction. The international symbols page explains every warning light icon. If you’re working on a Liberty that was sold in North America, this is the correct document. For a broader factory collection, look at Jeep KJ Service Manual – Factory OEM Repair Guide 6079 Pages.
Does the Manual Cover the 2.4L Gas Engine?
Yes. The index includes a dedicated “2.4L Gas Component and System Index” at the back. That engine is covered in the 9 – ENGINE section. There’s also 9S – ENGINE (for the 3.7L). Wiring diagrams are in section 8W. The manual is split into 35 group tabs, from Introduction to Service Manual Comment Forms. Every system has its own tab. No flipping through a generic wiring book. You want the ABS diagnostics? It’s in 5 – BRAKES. You want the HVAC? Section 24. The depth is what you’d expect from a dealer service manual – not a consumer-friendly condensation. That’s why it’s 2033 pages.
A quick note on safety: the towing section includes specific procedures for two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles, rear-end lifted, front-end lifted. If you’re pulling a KJ behind an RV, you need the transfer case in neutral and the correct towing procedure. It’s all written out.
One more thing: the manual includes the original OEM torque references – not recreated by some third party. For an overview of why OEM documentation is critical in the automotive industry, read this Automotive Industry Overview. For further context on service manual standards, check Automotive Industry Overview.
- Is this a reprint or a scanned PDF?
- Factory scan of the official Jeep KJ Service Manual. 2033 pages. No aftermarket editing.
- Does it include wiring diagrams for the Jeep KJ?
- Section 8W – Wiring is included. It has full color-coded diagrams for the entire vehicle: engine management, lighting, audio, heated systems, security, and more. Each wire gauge, connector pinout, and splice location is documented. The diagrams are legible at 100% zoom in the PDF. You can trace a circuit from the battery to the component without guessing. That’s something aftermarket wiring books never get right – they simplify and omit branches. This has every factory splice and ground point.
You can spend six hours chasing a no-start with a generic manual, or you can get the factory data in the first ten minutes. Access the Factory Manual and get back to turning wrenches, not turning pages of guesswork.
