Description
Hitachi Sumitomo 70, 70LC Technical Manual – Factory OEM Troubleshooting
You are staring at a ZAXIS 70 or 70LC that won’t swing right, the boom drifts, and the Dr. ZX monitor is flashing a code you don’t recognize. You need the real spec sheet. Not a PDF that says “refer to dealer.” Not a third-party reprint with fuzzy diagrams. You need the same 248-page binder that Hitachi Sumitomo issued to their own techs. I have torqued enough head bolts to know that aftermarket manuals get the cylinder head bolt pattern wrong. The Hitachi Sumitomo 70, 70LC Technical Manual is what I reach for when the machine throws a fault code and I have a customer watching the clock.
248 Pages of Factory Specs for the Hitachi Sumitomo 70 and 70LC
This is not a condensed pocket guide. It is the full Technical Manual (Troubleshooting volume TT1CDE) that comes from the factory. 248 pages cover operational performance tests, complete troubleshooting trees, and electrical system diagnostics. The manual is sectioned into five major groups: Introduction, Safety, Section 4 Operational Performance Test, Section 5 Troubleshooting, and the Service Manual Revision Request form. You get the same content the dealer techs use, including the built-in diagnosing system operation and the Dr. ZX fault code list.
Engine Test Procedures: Valve Clearance and Injection Timing
Group 2 of Section 4 is where you start if the engine runs rough or won’t reach speed. The manual walks you through engine compression pressure testing, valve clearance adjustment, nozzle check, and injection timing. Valve clearance is not rocket science, but the spec has to be dead on. I have seen a .002-inch error cause a hard-start condition that made a shop swap an entire injection pump. The manual gives you the factory clearance values for the 4-cylinder engine used in these machines. Do not guess.
Dr. ZX Fault Codes: Diagnosing Electrical Issues
Dr. ZX is the built-in diagnostic system. Section 5, Group 3 covers Troubleshooting A with a full fault code list for codes 01 through 18. You also get the sensor activating range table. If the Dr. ZX monitor shows a code you have never seen, you turn to page (the manual does not provide a specific page for this, but the fault code list is in Group 3) and read the condition, probable cause, and remedy. The manual also includes the Dr. ZX monitoring item list for the MC and the special function mode. This is how you tell the difference between a bad solenoid and a shorted harness without swapping parts all afternoon.
Why Use a Factory Technical Manual Instead of Third-Party Reprints?
Third-party manuals often omit the safety warnings and the step-by-step performance test procedures. This OEM manual starts with a full safety section that covers the safety alert symbols and signal words. It tells you that component weights are marked with the safety alert symbol – something a reprint might crop out because it takes up space. I do not trust aftermarket documentation on principle. When a solenoid valve set pressure is 500 psi and the aftermarket manual says 450 psi, that 50 psi difference can cause your swing brake to drift. Factory spec is factory spec. This manual came from Hitachi Sumitomo.
3 Systems Covered in the Hydraulic Component Tests
Group 4 of Section 4 is the hydraulic component test section. You get the primary pilot pressure, secondary pilot pressure, main pump delivery pressure, main relief valve set pressure, overload relief valve set pressure, and flow rate measurements for the three main pumps. If you suspect a main pump is failing, you follow the Main Pump 1 and 2 Flow Rate Measurement procedure. The manual includes the P-Q diagrams for pump 1, 2, and 3. That is the graph that tells you whether the pump is delivering enough volume at the right pressure. Without those diagrams, you are firing the parts cannon.
For the travel system, Group 3 covers travel speed, track revolution speed, mistrack check, and travel parking function check. The swing system includes swing speed, swing function drift check, swing motor leakage, swing bearing play, and the maximum swingable slant angle – a spec you do not find in any aftermarket guide.
Electrical system inspection is in Group 6. It covers fuse inspection, fusible link inspection, battery voltage check, alternator troubleshooting, continuity check, voltage and current measurement, and the use of test harnesses. The ICX (Information Control eXchange) section in Group 7 covers fault codes for the satellite terminal and data recording issues. You get the ICX fault code list and procedures for accessing and uploading data.
- Does the Technical Manual include wiring diagrams?
- No. Wiring diagrams are in the separate Workshop Manual (Vol. W1CDE). This troubleshooting volume focuses on fault code diagnostics, component tests, and system checks. You need both volumes for a full electrical overhaul.
- Will this manual work for a Hitachi 70LC with a different serial number range?
- This manual is written for the ZAXIS 70 and 70LC excavators. If your machine is a 70LC with a serial number that falls within the production years covered by this manual (the publication year is not listed, but the manual number KM-1CDE and volume TT1CDE-01 are original factory prints), then the fault codes, engine specs, and test procedures apply. Always cross-reference the engine serial number with the injection pump section in Group 5. If your machine has an aftermarket engine swap, the valve clearance specs may differ – check the engine manufacturer’s data separately.
You do not need to be a dealer technician to use this manual, but you do need basic mechanical skills – reading a multimeter, using a tachometer, and understanding hydraulic pressure readings. The manual assumes you have the tools listed in the Workshop Manual (not included). If you are a home garage guy who has rebuilt a lawnmower engine and wants to tackle an excavator, this manual will save you from ordering the wrong relief valve. It is the same document that I keep on the bench next to my torque wrench.
