Description
Hitachi Sumitomo 650LC-3, 670LCH-3 Workshop Manual

If you are wrenching on a Hitachi Sumitomo 650LC-3 or 670LCH-3 and don’t have the factory paperwork, you are gambling with torque specs and clearances. I have seen too many guys guess on control valve reassembly and end up with a machine that drifts or drops the boom. This Workshop Manual holds 560 pages of Hitachi’s own disassembly sequences, maintenance standards, and – most importantly – the exact tightening torque values for every bolted joint on the upperstructure and undercarriage. No aftermarket translation, no scanned copy of a copy. This is the PDF that came from the factory.
The book opens with a safety section – page 4 specifically – that spells out the safety alert symbols and lifting precautions. Read it. The manual is written for an experienced technician, but if you are a serious home garage guy with a decent tool set, the procedures are laid out in a logical order: remove, disassemble, inspect, assemble, install. Each chapter lists the required tools and gives you the wear limits. I have rebuilt pump transmissions on these machines, and having the torque table from Section 1 saved me from snapping a bolt in the main pump housing.
Torque Specs and Tightening Procedures
Section 1 contains a dedicated subsection called TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATION followed by a Torque Chart and Piping Joint torque values. That is the page you will bookmark. The manual also covers periodic replacement of parts – something most aftermarket books skip. You get the factory intervals for seals and hoses.
What Does the Pump Device Section Cover?
This is where the manual earns its keep. Under Section 2 – Upperstructure, the Pump Device chapter walks you through removal, disassembly of the pump transmission, main pump, main regulator, fan pump, fan regulator. Each sub-chapter includes maintenance standards. You also get exploded views of the pilot pump and solenoid valve structure. If you have a 650LC-3 with a sluggish swing or a 670LCH-3 that overheats the hydraulics, you need these procedures.
560 Pages of Factory Disassembly Sequences
That page count covers everything from the cab glass dimensions to the track adjuster. Section 3 – Undercarriage – has removal and installation for the swing bearing, travel device, center joint, front idler, upper/lower rollers, and track assembly. The travel device chapter alone includes separate disassembly for the travel motor and brake valve, each with its own maintenance standard. No guessing about tolerances.
Follow the Safety Warnings on Page 4
Page 4 of the PDF has the safety alert symbol definitions. The manual uses CAUTION, WARNING, and DANGER headings. One specific note: the weight of the counterweight is given in the removal procedure – you need a hoist rated for that load. I have seen a guy try to use a chainfall that was too light. The manual prevents that mistake.
Upperstructure: Cab, Counterweight, and Pump Device
Beyond the pump, the upperstructure section covers cab removal with glass dimensions, counterweight handling, main frame service, control valve (both 4-spool and 5-spool housing sides), swing device disassembly, pilot valves, solenoid valves, signal control valve, shockless valve, fan valve, fan motor, and engine removal. Each control valve subsection has a disassembly and assembly procedure – the manual does not assume you know the order of spool removal. It tells you.
What This Manual Does NOT Cover
This is the Workshop Manual – part number W1J7-E-00. Troubleshooting and operational principle are separate volumes (TT1J7-E and TO1J7-E). If you need diagnostics for an electrical fault, you want the Technical Manual (Troubleshooting). But for mechanical rebuild, this is the only book you need.
- Does this manual include wiring diagrams?
- No. Wiring diagrams are in the Technical Manual (Troubleshooting). This Workshop Manual covers hardware removal, installation, and disassembly/assembly procedures.
- Can I use this for a 650LC-3 or 670LCH-3 with a different engine?
- The manual is written for both models as equipped from factory. If the engine was swapped, you need the Engine Manual separately. The removal procedure references the standard engine mounting.
- Are the torque values in inch-pounds or foot-pounds?
- The torque chart in Section 1 uses both N·m and ft-lb. You will find the conversion. The manual also includes piping joint torque – those are typically in ft-lb for larger fittings.
- How many pages cover the control valve?
- Approximately 60 pages are dedicated to control valve disassembly and assembly across both 4-spool and 5-spool variants, including housing front/rear surfaces and separate spool sections.
