Ford Mustang, Capri 1981 Repair Manual – What a Real Mechanic Thinks

Ford Mustang and Mercury Capri Haynes repair manual cover from 1981 showing a red Mustang and blue Capri

I’ve torqued more head bolts on Ford four-cylinders and V8s than most of you have had hot dinners. When a 1981 Mustang or Capri rolls into my San Antonio bay, I reach for this Ford Mustang, Capri 1981 Repair Manual. It’s 355 pages of actual procedure, not fluff. Covers the 1979-1992 Mustang and 1979-1986 Mercury Capri — all engines, all transmissions. The guy who wrote it tore down a real car and rebuilt it. You get that level of detail, not some aftermarket reprint that says “remove bolts.” I hate those.

If you are a home garage guy, this manual keeps you from freezing mid-job because the torque spec for the 3.8L V6 main cap is not in your head. It is on page 2A-1 for the four-cylinder, or the V6 section if you are doing the 2.8L. The contents list every chapter: Tune-Up, Four-Cylinder Engine, Inline Six, 2.8L V6, 3.8L V6 and V8, General Engine Overhaul, Cooling/Heating/AC, Fuel/Exhaust, Engine Electrical, Emissions, Manual and Automatic Transmissions, Clutch/Driveline, Brakes, Suspension/Steering, Body, Chassis Electrical. That is everything to keep a Fox-body on the road.

Tune-Up and Routine Maintenance: Chapter 1

You need to set ignition timing or replace spark plugs on a 1981 Capri? Chapter 1 walks you through it with the correct gap and torque values. No guesswork. The manual tells you the exact plug type, the firing order, and the sequence for adjusting the carburetor idle mixture. I have seen too many guys throw a distributor in without checking the base timing because some YouTube video said “close enough.” Close enough costs you a head gasket later. Use the book.

Engine Options: Four-Cylinder Through V8 (Chapters 2A-2E)

Four separate chapters for different engines — that is how detailed this gets. The 2.3L four-cylinder, the 3.3L inline six, the 2.8L V6, and the 3.8L V6 plus all V8s. Each one covers cylinder head removal, valve adjustment, oil pan removal, piston ring fitting, everything. For the 5.0L V8 guys, Chapter 2D shows the torque sequence for the intake manifold and the main bearing caps. Page 2A-1 has the specs for the four-cylinder timing belt replacement. I am not inventing numbers — they are printed right there.

One thing I like: the manual includes General Engine Overhaul Procedures as Chapter 2E. That means if you are rebuilding any engine in the range, you get the honing specs, ring end gaps, bearing clearances, and assembly lube recommendations. It is not brand-specific but covers the shared procedures. Good for anyone who does not rebuild an engine every week.

Cooling, Heating and Air Conditioning: Chapter 3

Ever fight with a heater core on a 1985 Mustang? The dashboard comes apart in a specific order, and the manual shows it. Chapter 3 gives you the coolant capacity, thermostat opening temperature (195°F), and the belt routing for the AC compressor. If your Capri has a leaking radiator, the manual tells you how to drain, remove, and install the new one without breaking the plastic tanks on the aftermarket radiator. That is worth the access price alone.

Fuel and Exhaust Systems: Chapter 4

The fuel system on these cars can be carbureted or fuel-injected depending on the year. Chapter 4 covers both types. For 1981 models, you get the carburetor adjustment specs and the fuel pump pressure test procedure. If you are swapping to a later EFI system, the exhaust system section tells you the pipe diameters and hanger locations. I have used it to route dual exhaust on a Capri RS and it saved me three trips to the parts store.

Suspension and Steering: Factory Alignment Specs (Chapter 10)

You cannot eyeball a Fox-body alignment. Chapter 10 lists caster, camber, and toe-in for both Mustang and Capri. The front strut replacement procedure includes the torque for the top nut (41 ft-lbs) and the lower bolt. If you skip the torque wrench on that nut, the strut will rattle loose. I have seen it happen. The manual also covers rear axle alignment, which on these cars is adjustable with shims. Do not guess the shim thickness — use the table on page 10-1.

12 Chapters Covering Every System

Transmission (manual and automatic), clutch and driveline, brakes (disc and drum), body panels, chassis electrical wiring — Chapter 12 alone is worth the price if your 1981 Mustang has electrical gremlins. The wiring diagrams are at the end. They show wire colors, connector pinouts, and ground locations. I have used them to diagnose a no-start caused by a corroded fusible link. Saved four hours of chasing wires. Other manuals I have used just show a generic diagram. This one is specific to the 1979-1992 platform.

The manual also includes troubleshooting charts in the introductory pages, safety first warnings, jumper cable procedures, and a list of automotive chemicals and lubricants you need on the shelf. If you are a beginner, read the “Safety first!” section before you put on jack stands. That is not a suggestion.

What You Need to Know Before Buying

This is a Haynes manual, not a Ford factory service manual. But it was created by tearing down the actual vehicles — a 1979 Mustang and a 1986 Capri — so every step was verified. The specifications come from Ford and from real-world measurement. I trust it for routine maintenance and engine swaps. If you need the official Ford diagrams for obscure electrical circuits, you might want the Ford Factory Service Manual supplement. For general repairs, this is the one I recommend to customers who work at home.

Access the Factory Manual now and keep your Mustang or Capri running right. No more guessing whether a bolt needs 30 or 40 ft-lbs. It is all in the book.

Does this manual cover the 2.3L turbo engine?
Yes. The Four-Cylinder Engine chapter (2A) includes the 2.3L turbocharged version with boost pressure specs and head torque values.
Are wiring diagrams included?
Wiring diagrams are located after Chapter 12. They cover the entire chassis electrical system including lighting, ignition, starting, charging, accessories, and the emissions controller. Use them with a test light and the troubleshooting section — do not rely on memory. I have traced a short in a Capri taillight using these diagrams in under an hour.
What about torque specs for the V8 head bolts?
The General Engine Overhaul chapter (2E) and the V8-specific chapter (2D) list all torque sequences and values for head bolts, main bearings, and connecting rods. The sequence is shown in an illustration. Do not reuse head bolts on these engines — the manual tells you to measure them with a thread pitch gauge and replace if stretched.
Is this the OEM manual or a reprint?
This is a Haynes manual, based on a complete teardown and rebuild of the vehicles. It uses OEM-sourced specifications and Ford-verified torque values. It is not a photocopy of the Ford shop manual, but the data matches. I have compared the torque specs for the 5.0L main caps side by side with the Ford manual and found no difference.
