Description

Ford ESD-442, ESD-659, ESD-660T, ESD-662 1983 Service Manual

If you have ever cracked open a third-party manual for a Ford industrial diesel and found torque specs that don’t match the bolt grade, you know the frustration. That is why I use the factory book—the Ford ESD-442, ESD-659, ESD-660T, ESD-662 1983 Service Manual. 127 pages of OEM data, not guesses. This is the same binder that sat on the bench at the Ford Power Products shop in Dearborn. You want to rebuild a basic engine? This is where you start.

Ford ESD-662 1983 Diesel Engine Service Manual cover with Ford Power Products logo

Basic Engine Diagnosis: Camshaft Lobe Lift and Crankshaft End Play

Oil pan off, crank exposed. You need to check end play before you order bearings. Page 1-05 tells you the exact procedure: dial indicator on the crankshaft, pry bar back and forth. Spec is in the manual—don’t guess. Same for camshaft lobe lift. The manual gives you the factory minimum for each lobe. If you skip this step and install a used cam, you will have a miss you cannot tune out. Diagnosis and Testing section starts on page 1-04 with camshaft lobe lift, then crankshaft end play, then flywheel face runout. That is the order I follow.

What Does the Manual Cover for Cylinder Head Work?

Head gasket failure on an ESD-660T? You pull the head, but then what? The manual walks through resurfacing limits on page 1-15, valve guide replacement, valve seat insert replacement. It also covers valve springs, push rods, rocker shafts. No generic “remove and replace” fluff—specific Ford service procedures. You need the torque sequence for the cylinder head bolts? That is in the Assembly section, page 1-18. You will not find it in a Chilton’s.

Get the Right Torque Specs from the OEM Pages

Torque values are scattered through the book where they apply—connecting rod nuts, main bearing caps, flywheel bolts. One wrong value and you are pulling the pan again. The factory spec for crankshaft bearing caps is listed in the Crankshaft and Bearings subsection on page 1-13. Do not use a generic chart. These engines have different bolt grades depending on the build date. The manual calls out the exact torque for each fastener.

Assembly Sequence: Camshaft and Crankshaft Installation

Putting the rotating assembly back together? The manual has a specific order: camshaft installation first (page 1-19), then crankshaft gear installation, then crankshaft installation. Timing gear housing goes on after that. If you install the crank before the cam gear, you will fight the timing marks. I have seen it. The Assembly section on page 1-18 lists every step with photos. Follow it. And do not reuse the front seal—the manual tells you the correct driver size for installation on page 1-22.

Ford ESD-442, ESD-659, ESD-660T, ESD-662 1983 Service Manual – Content Breakdown

This manual covers four diesel models: the ESD-442, ESD-659, ESD-660T, and ESD-662. All are Ford industrial engines from the Power Products line. The book is split into Part I – Basic Engine, which includes identification, description, diagnosis and testing, disassembly, cleaning/inspection/overhaul, cylinder head work, and assembly. Every component index entry matches the physical engine: camshaft, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, oil pump, timing gears. Page 1-02 shows how to identify your engine by serial number prefix. No guesswork.

Source Validity: OEM vs Aftermarket

This is an original Ford service manual, printed November 1983. It is not a scanned reprint from a third party. The Ford Parts and Service Division released it under PPO 194-243. That means the torque values, clearance specs, and diagnostic procedures come straight from the engineers who designed the engine. Aftermarket manuals often transpose numbers from a different model year. I have caught those errors. This book is the only source I trust for camshaft end play limits and crankshaft journal diameters.

For related industrial diesel manuals, check Ford 2100, 2110, 3100, 4100, 4110 Service Manual – Pre-1975 if you work on older Ford power units. The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth 1985 Service Manual – OEM Specs is a different animal—gasoline, not diesel—but it follows the same factory documentation standard. And if you need the 1979 SSD series, Ford SSD-327, SSD-437, SSD-655 1979 Service Manual OEM covers those inline models. For broader context on proper service documentation, see Automotive Industry Overview and Automotive Industry Overview for industry standards on factory data integrity.

Does this manual cover the fuel injection system?
No. This manual focuses on the basic engine block, cylinder head, and rotating assembly. Fuel system service information is not included.
How do I know the torque specs are accurate for my engine?
These are the original Ford factory specifications from 1983, printed in the same document that went to authorized dealers. Each torque value, such as connecting rod nuts (page 1-13), came from the engineering release. If you follow the manual exactly, you will not overtorque or undertorque. That is why I keep a copy on my tool box. Aftermarket reprints often omit the torque sequence for the timing gear housing bolts—this manual has it on page 1-20. Access the factory manual and you get the exact data Ford intended.
