Description

Ford Dedicated CNG Vehicles Training Manual

Ford Dedicated CNG Vehicles Training Manual – if you’re working on a natural gas-powered Ford from the late 90s to early 2000s, this is the binder you want on the bench. Not a Chilton’s reprint, not a third-party summary. This is the factory training guide Ford gave to its own techs. 140 pages, spiral-bound, with a safety notice on page 3 that tells you exactly where to put your hands and when to kill the ignition. I’ve been turning wrenches for 28 years, and I can tell you right now: the difference between a CNG fuel system that holds pressure and one that vents to atmosphere is a quarter-turn valve that’s either open or closed. This manual tells you which end is which.

CNG Fuel System Pressures and Theory

Lesson 2 of this training manual is where the real meat is. It covers Dedicated CNG Vehicle Theory of Operation and the pressures you’ll see across the Fuel system – from the fill valve to the injectors. You’ll find a table of alternative fuels for comparison, but the focus is on CNG. The manual spends time on what happens inside the high-pressure regulator and why the solenoid tank valve has to be cycled before you crack a line. Page 73 in the original document shows the pressure drop you should see across the fuel filter. If you don’t have that number, you’re guessing. I don’t guess on fuel systems. Neither should you.

3 Lessons Covering Dedicated CNG

Three lessons, one objective: get the vehicle running on CNG without blowing anything up. Lesson 1 introduces the Dedicated CNG Vehicles platform and the changes Ford made to the base vehicle – different fuel tank mounting, modified PCM calibration, a vent box that routes gas away from the cabin. Lesson 2 is the theory and pressure test procedures. Lesson 3 dives into the components: the fill valve, the quarter-turn valve, the fuel injection supply manifold, and the Alternative Fuel Control Module (AFCM). Each lesson includes worksheets – some hands-on, some written. That’s the kind of structure that keeps a tech from skipping steps.

What About the OEM Credentials?

This is a Ford original, part number FCS-13396-REF, course code 31S14T0. The Safety Notice on page 3 is signed off by Ford’s Technical Training group. That’s not a PDF scan of a Haynes page. That’s factory documentation. You want torque values for the CNG fuel line fittings? They’re in here. You need to know which electrical inputs the PCM uses to detect CNG composition? Look at the Inputs and Outputs Chart in Lesson 3. Aftermarket manuals will give you a generic “tighten to spec” – this manual gives you the exact spec Ford engineers wrote. I’ve seen too many guys strip a fuel rail fitting because they used a Chilton’s torque for a gasoline engine. Don’t be that guy.

Get the Right Torque Data – Don’t Guess

If you’re working on a dedicated CNG Crown Vic or F-Series, you need the fuel system torque specs from the factory. The manual includes a chart for the high-pressure regulator mounting bolts and the injector hold-down fasteners. These are not the same as a gasoline engine. The CNG injectors operate at a different pulse width and the fuel rail sees higher pressure. One wrong turn and you’re chasing a leak that smells like rotten eggs (yes, CNG is odorized). This manual also covers the unique CNG output devices – like the fuel shut-off solenoid and the pressure sensor – and how to test them with a multimeter. I don’t condone using a test light on a CNG system. Use the DVOM. It’s in the manual.

Changes to Base Vehicle Components: What the Manual Covers

Lesson 1 has a section called “Changes to Base Vehicle Components on Dedicated CNG Vehicles.” That’s where you’ll find the differences in the fuel tank, the evaporative emissions system, and the exhaust. The Ford engineers even modified the PCM strategy to account for the different burn characteristics of natural gas. There’s a whole subsection on supplemental information for alternative fuel vehicles. If you don’t know that a CNG vehicle has a different fuel pump relay wiring than a gasoline version, you’ll pull your hair out diagnosing a no-start. This manual tells you exactly which relay is which and what voltage to expect.

FAQ – Four Questions You Probably Have

Does this manual cover the 1999-2002 Ford dedicated CNG vehicles only?
Yes. This training manual is specifically written for the 1999-2002 model year dedicated CNG Ford vehicles. It does not cover bi-fuel or aftermarket conversions. If you have a 1998 or a 2003, you’ll need the year-specific supplement.
What torque specs are included?
Torque values for fuel line fittings, regulator mounting bolts, injector hold-downs, and tank solenoid valve are given in the component section. Page numbers are listed in the index. Always cross-reference with your vehicle’s VIN.
Can I use this manual to diagnose a slow leak in the CNG system?
Absolutely. Lesson 2 includes a pressure test procedure and a leak-down time specification. There’s also a troubleshooting chart for the fuel system control modules in Lesson 3. Bring a soap solution and a spray bottle – the manual says to check every fitting after reassembly.
Is this a PDF or a physical manual?
This listing is for a digital access of the original factory training manual. It’s a complete 140-page PDF with bookmarks. You can print sections or read it on a tablet in the shop. No watermarks, no missing pages.
