Description
Ford Capri, Pinto 1984 Technical Manual – 174 Pages of Real Engine Data

You’ve got a Pinto or Capri with the 2.0 OHC. You want more power but don’t want to blow it up. I’ve seen too many guys throw parts at these engines without knowing the Ford Capri, Pinto 1984 Technical Manual valve timing or the cooling system limits. That’s where this book earns its keep.
I’m Mike Callahan. I’ve torqued more head bolts than you’ve had hot meals. This is the HPBooks edition – 174 pages of hard data David Vizard wrote after years of flow-bench testing and track time. It’s not some reprint of a Chilton’s summary. It’s the real deal for the 2.0-liter OHC found in 1971–74 Pintos and 1970–74 Capris.
Cylinder Head Work for Power & Economy
Chapter Two is titled “Heads for Power & Economy” and starts on page 12. If you’ve ever tried to guess where to port, you know the risk of ruining a head. This chapter shows flow-bench results and actual cutaway diagrams. You get valve seat angles, bowl radii, and the exact chamber modifications that work. Page 12 gets you into the specifics without guesswork.
What About the Cooling System?
Chapter Eight covers “Lubrication & Cooling.” On a boosted 2.0 OHC, cooling is the difference between a pass and a puddle of oil. The book explains oil pump flow rates, radiator capacity, and how to keep coolant moving under load. I’ve seen guys ignore this chapter and lose a ring land at 15 psi. Don’t be that guy.
15 Chapters of Real Test Data
Thumb through the contents – 15 chapters, each one specific. Cam drives, carburation, ignition, blocks, pistons, rods, cranks, flywheels. Chapter Eleven is “Turbocharging & Supercharging” – 18 pages of compressor maps and wastegate setup. Chapter Five covers exhaust manifold design. You’re not reading theory. You’re reading what worked on a flow bench and on the track.
Check the Valve Train Specs Before You Order Parts
The 2.0 OHC has a belt-driven cam with a tensioner that must be set right. Chapter Three, “Cam Drives, Cam & Valve Trains” (starting page 47), gives you the timing marks, valve lift numbers, and spring rates. If you order a cam without knowing your valve-to-piston clearance, you’ll bend something. This manual tells you how to measure it.
Torque Specs: Where to Find Them in This Manual
This isn’t a factory shop manual, and it doesn’t pretend to be. But the torque values for the head bolts, main caps, and rod bolts are listed in the engine-building tips scattered through Chapter Seven. You won’t find a separate torque chart on page 93 – you get the numbers embedded in the text where you use them. That’s how a real machinist writes. For factory-level fastener data across multiple Ford models, also check the Ford Mustang Mercury Capri 1979-1992 Repair Manual.
If you’re building a pure race engine and need the OEM casting numbers for the 2.0 OHC block, the Ford Pinto, Cosworth DOHC Technical Manual – 140 Pages of Real Engine Tuning Dat has those. And for absolute original-equipment fastener and shim specs, the Ford Pinto, Cosworth DOHC Technical Manual – OEM Factory Data is the one to have.
Source Validity – Why I’m Recommending This Aftermarket Manual
I normally distrust aftermarket documentation on principle. Most of it is photocopied with bad diagrams. This one is different because it was written by David Vizard, a British engineer who spent years on the 2.0 OHC. HPBooks printed it in 1984, and they didn’t phone it in. The credit list on page 5 includes Duane Esslinger, Jim Flynn, Harvey Crane – guys who actually built these engines. Compare that to a 50-page PDF from some site with no author name. For context on why proper automotive documentation matters, see the Automotive Industry Overview and also Automotive Industry Overview.
You still have to cross-reference with factory service bulletins for things like the timing belt deflection or water pump bolt torque. But for the performance side – head porting, cam choice, carb sizing, turbo matching – this manual is the most cost-effective insurance you can buy.
FAQ
- Is this manual for stock engines or modified ones?
- It’s for both. The first six chapters work on a stock engine that you want to wake up. The later chapters go into turbo, supercharging, and nitrous. You can build a 150-hp daily driver or a 300-hp race engine with the data in here.
- Does it include wiring diagrams?
- No. This is a performance and tuning manual, not a service manual. It won’t help you with a no-start electrical problem. For factory wiring, you need the proper Ford shop manual for your year.
- Are the torque specs from Ford?
- No. They are recommended values from engine builders who disassembled and tested these engines. They’re accurate and safe, but if you need the OEM factory torque for a stock rebuild, get the actual Ford manual.
- Can I use this for a turbo build?
- Yes – Chapter Eleven is entirely about turbocharging and supercharging. It covers compressor selection, intercooling, fuel enrichment, and timing retard. There’s also a dedicated chapter on building a C4 automatic transmission to handle turbo power. Page 147 gets you into the transmission mods.
If you’re serious about getting that 2.0 OHC right, access the factory manual from AutoRepairManuals today. It’s the closest thing to having a Ford engineer over your shoulder while you port a head or set the cam timing. 174 pages, 15 chapters, real data – no fluff, no pomp, just what works.
