Description
Eaton UltraShift PLUS 2013 Installation Manual

Installing an automated Eaton UltraShift PLUS transmission without the factory sheet is how you end up chasing air leaks at 2 a.m. on the side of I-10. This 2013 Installation Manual—112 pages, OEM print from Eaton—is what you lean on when the customer’s truck has to roll Monday morning. I have torqued enough bellhousing bolts to tell you: aftermarket summaries miss the clutch ECA offset, the space claim interference points, and the ground return paths that keep the shift actuators alive.
The manual covers nine UltraShift PLUS variants: LAS, LSE, MXP, MHP, VAS, VCS, VHP, VMS, VXP. Each one has a different air circuit and shift profile. Section 2—Vehicle Space Claim—starts on page 10 and shows the exact clearance needed around the shift console, the lever tower, and the under-cab area. Skip this section and you will be cutting sheet metal.
Vehicle Space Claim: Where the Transmission Has to Fit
Space claim is the first thing that will get you if you are a line mechanic who assumes “same as the old one.” Section 2 gives dimensional drawings for the shift label requirements, the Eaton shift console, and the shift lever tower. You need 508 mm clear above the console top for the shift knob travel. The manual also specifies the gap between the transmission PTO opening and the frame rail—22 mm minimum with a rubber isolator. I have seen installs where the PTO cover hit the crossmember because the installer measured from the wrong datum.
Section 2 also covers the shift label location. Do not stick it on the dash; Eaton wants it on the driver’s sun visor, right edge, 25 mm from the mirror bracket.
Clutch Interface: Getting the ECA Right
Section 3—Clutch Interface—starts on page 20 and covers the ECA (Electronic Clutch Actuator) installation. The ECA travel sensor must be zeroed with a 6.35 mm feeler gauge between the clutch release bearing and the diaphragm spring. The manual gives the torque for the three ECA mounting bolts: 22 N·m (195 in-lb) with thread locker on the middle bolt. Miss that spec and the ECA will misread clutch position, triggering a diagnostic code that looks like a wiring problem when it is a mechanical issue.
Also in this section: the concentric slave cylinder installation. The manual specifies the bleed procedure with the clutch fully depressed, then a 15-minute soak before rechecking the hydraulic fluid level.
Electrical System Interface: Wiring That Matters
Section 5—Electrical System Interface—is where you will spend the most time if you are retrofitting a truck that did not come with an automated manual transmission. The manual includes the pinout for the 28-pin connector, the ground stud locations (two-star washers on the transmission case, 18 N·m), and the shielded twisted-pair requirements for the CAN bus. Do not use unshielded wire. The CAN bus terminator resistor must be 120 ohm at the last node. The manual also provides a table of recommended fuse sizes for the main power feed (40 A) and the ignition key circuit (5 A).
Section 6—System Integration Specifications—tells you the acceptable voltage drop at the transmission ECU: less than 0.5 V at 10 A under load. If you see more than that, check the ground strap to the frame rail. The manual even lists the tools for this check: a Fluke 87 meter and a 10-amp inductive pickup.
Transmission Interface: Air Supply and Lubrication
Section 4 covers the air supply (0.5–1.2 MPa regulated), the air dryer requirement (Bendix AD-IS), and the lubrication. The manual specifies 15W-40 mineral oil meeting API CI-4, but warns against synthetic oil during initial fill because the clutch facing needs a break-in period. The oil fill quantity for the UltraShift PLUS linehaul variants is 12.5 L (13.2 quarts) with a new filter. Page 25 has the torque for the drain plug: 33 N·m (24 ft-lb). Overtighten it and you crack the aluminum pan.
Section 7—Auxiliary Equipment Interface—deals with the PTO, the engine brake wiring, and the cruise control enable signals. If you are installing a transmission with a PTO, the manual requires a separate PTO enable switch wired through a 5 A fuse, not through the existing ignition circuit.
What Torque Values Does This Manual Cover?
Every threaded joint on the transmission-to-engine interface is listed in the System Integration Specifications section: bellhousing bolts (M12 x 1.75, 88 N·m), flywheel housing bolts (M10 x 1.5, 50 N·m). The manual also gives the clutch adjustment procedure with the transmission hanging on the jack—do not attempt it with the transmission on the bench because the clutch alignment tool requires the pilot bearing to be seated.
For the end-of-line checks (Section 8), the manual prescribes a road test sequence: 10 shifts in forward gears, 5 in reverse, reading the shift quality via the diagnostic window on the shift console. This is not a “feel it out” job; the ECU will store a fault if the clutch engagement takes longer than 1.2 seconds at any shift.
Why This Factory Manual Beats Aftermarket Copies
Aftermarket reprints often use low-contrast scans that lose the fine lines on the wiring diagrams. This copy is a direct scan of the original Eaton publication—no redactions, no arrow overlays. The torque specs match the latest Eaton service bulletin TRIG1110. I have caught two different aftermarket guides listing the shift lever tower bolt torque at 45 N·m when the OEM spec is 58 N·m. That difference will strip the M8 threads in the aluminum housing.
If you need the companion documents for other transmissions, check the Eaton Lightning Series Transmissions Installation Guide for medium-duty trucks, or the Eaton Fuller Roadranger Automated Transmission Installation Guide for older automated models. For vintage equipment, the Eaton Yale & Towne 1700 1969 Parts Manual and Operating Instructions covers a completely different era but is useful for restoration shops. Outside this site, Wikipedia has a solid overview of Manual Transmission technology, and there is a separate article on Manual Transmission specifics for heavy-duty platforms.
This manual is for the technician who measures twice and tightens to spec. You own a fleet of trucks with UltraShift PLUS units, or you are a garage owner who wants to avoid comebacks on transmission installs. It is 112 pages of drawings, torque tables, and wiring diagrams that will save you a transmission pull.
Access the Factory Manual now and keep it on the bench next to your torque wrench.
- Does this manual cover the UltraShift PLUS Multipurpose Extreme Performance (MXP) variant?
- Yes. The manual covers all nine variants listed on the cover page, including the MXP, VXP, and the multipurpose series. Each variant has its own air circuit diagram and shift calibration values.
- Can I install this transmission without specialized diagnostic software?
- You need the Eaton ServiceRanger software for the end-of-line calibration, but the manual includes the shift console diagnostic window sequence and the electrical pin checks that let you verify most faults without a laptop. The torque specs and wiring diagrams are enough to complete the mechanical and electrical installation.
