You get the exact DaimlerChrysler part numbers, not some aftermarket cross-reference that may or may not fit. I have swapped a Durango SLT torsion bar using this manual. The torque spec for the torsion bar adjusting bolt? It is in the book. Do not guess. The front axle assembly, drive shafts, housing, and skid plate are all broken out with their own figures. If you are rebuilding the front diff on a 4×4, you need Figure 2-610. Period.

Rear axle? Group 3 covers the Chrysler Model 9.25 differential. Vent, housing, everything. No shortcuts.

Get the Right Torque Specs – Don’t Guess

I have seen a rear brake backing plate come loose because someone used a generic torque value. Group 5 – Service Brakes – gives you the exact foot-pounds for the 11-inch x 2.25-inch rear brakes, the master cylinder, and the power brake booster. The brake lines from the EHCU and RWAL II to the frame? Figure 5-510. If you are bleeding a Durango SLT, the sequence is in there. Failure to follow the factory procedure means air in the system. Air means a soft pedal. A soft pedal means a crash. I do not say that to scare you. I say it because I have towed the results.

Does This Manual Cover the Electrical System?

Group 8 Electrical is 30-plus pages of starters, alternators, distributors, modules, relays, sensors, and single-board engine controllers (JTEC). The wiring diagrams for the engine, headlamp-to-dash, instrument panel, and body accessories are all factory-original. No colored lines that blur into each other. Figure 8-1210, Wiring–Engine, shows you exactly which wire goes where. If you are chasing a no-start on a 5.9L 8-cylinder (VIN code Z, 1998-2001), the sensor and relay locations are listed. Even the spark plug cables and coils are broken out in Figure 8-1905. Buy a third-party manual and you might get the pinout for a 1999 when you own a 2001. Not here.

VIN Decoding: Why It Matters for Parts Ordering

Page 1 is the VIN plate decoding information. Position 6 tells you the vehicle line – R for Durango 4×2, S for Durango 4×4. Position 7: 2 means Durango and Durango SLT. Engine codes: X for 3.9L 6-cylinder, Y for 5.2L 8-cylinder, Z for 5.9L 8-cylinder. If you order brake pads without checking the VIN, you might get the wrong size. This manual saves that headache. 7 Systems Covered – From Cooling to Parking Brake

Group 7 Cooling gives you radiator parts for six- and eight-cylinder engines, water pump, coolant tank, drive pulleys, belts, and transmission oil cooler lines. Group 4 Parking Brake covers the lever and cables. Group 09A Instrument Panel includes the cluster, radio, speakers, antenna, and overhead console. There is even a wiring repair section – Figure 8-1605. If you are splicing a harness on a Durango SLT, you need to know the gauge and the crimp type. The manual tells you. Aftermarket manuals? They skip that. Then you call me wondering why your tail lights don’t work.

I have been doing this long enough to know that a 337-page OEM manual is worth more than a shelf of Chilton copies. The suspension diagrams alone will save you hours of cross-referencing part numbers. Suspension work is not forgiving. Get the control arm bushing torque wrong and you will be replacing ball joints inside a year. Do it right the first time.
