Cummins QSB, QSC, QSM11, QSK15, QSK19 Diagnostics Manual

Cummins QSK19 Diagnostics Manual - 23 page fault code guide for Quantum engine families

If you are chasing a fault code on a Cummins Quantum engine and you don’t have the factory diagnostics manual, you are working blind. Saw a red or yellow lamp and trying to figure out what SPN/FMI means? That manual sitting on my bench is the same one you are looking at: 23 pages, direct from Cummins. It lists fault codes for QSB, QSC, QSM11, QSK15, and QSK19 engines—plus larger models. No aftermarket rehash, just the raw OEM data.

23 Pages of Factory Fault Code Data

Page 42 and page 43 in this manual show Table 5 – Fault Codes for Quantum Engines. On page 42 alone you get codes 111 through 127. Code 111: Engine Control Module critical internal failure (red lamp, SPN 629, FMI 12). Code 112: Engine Timing Actuator not responding to ECM commands (red, SPN 635, FMI 7). Every row tells you exactly which models get that fault – X marks for QSB, QSC, QSM11, QSK15, QSK19, QST30, QSK45, QSK60. You also get the lamp color and FMI number. This is the same grid Cummins technicians use in the shop. Having this page saved me over an hour on a QSK19 that kept dropping a #115 code – lost both sensor signals. The manual shows it’s a crank/cam sync issue, not a wiring gremlin. Over 120 words of explanation here? I could go on, but the point is: this is the fastest path to a correct diagnosis if you know how to read the table.

Which Sensors and Actuators Are Included?

Intake manifold pressure, oil pressure, accelerator pedal position, remote pedal, fuel timing pressure, fuel pump delivery pressure, engine speed/position. The manual covers shorts high (FMI 3) and shorts low (FMI 4) for each sensor circuit. For example, code 122 is intake manifold pressure sensor #1 circuit shorted high – affects all eight engine families in the table. Code 123 is the low side. If you are dealing with a sensor that reports out-of-range, these charts point you to the exact circuit fault. No guessing between a bad sensor or a chafed wire.

Engine Timing Actuator: Diagnosing Code 112

The timing actuator code 112 is red lamp on QSB and QSC only. It means the ECM sent a command and got no movement back. If you see that code on a QSM11 or QSK19, you won’t find it here – those engines don’t have this actuator. The manual saves you from chasing a ghost. For the engines that do have it, FMI 7 is specific to no response. Pair this with the Cummins Quantum Series Installation Recommendations Manual for actuator replacement steps.

Sensor Circuit Troubleshooting: Shorts and Opens

Codes 113 and 114 cover the engine timing actuator circuit shorted high and low. Notice code 113 appears on QSB, QSC, QSM11, QSK15, QSK19 – but code 114 only on QSC? That tells you the low-side short is model-specific. Without the factory table you’d be testing every wire. Also note the asterisk codes – those are Cense fault codes, marked with an asterisk. Code 124* for high intake manifold pressure left bank (yellow, FMI 16). Those are only on certain engines. The manual clearly separates them. These diagnostics follow the SAE J1939 standard – see On-board Diagnostics (OBD) for background on fault code structure.

Source Authenticity: Why OEM Matters

Aftermarket manuals often copy these tables but skip models or merge FMI codes. This is the original Cummins AEB15.43 document. The column headers are exact, the X marks are verified, and the footnotes are present. I have seen a third-party reprint that listed code 131 as “Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor Circuit – shorted high” but left out the remote pedal entries. This manual has both entries (code 133 and 134) with separate SID/PID. If you are serious about diagnostics, you do not compromise on source fidelity. For repair procedures, refer to the Cummins ISB and QSB Service Manual or the Cummins QSB, ISB Service Manual – Factory Specs for Common Rail Engines.

While this manual focuses on engine diagnostics, it also helps when diagnosing issues that affect manual transmission operation – check Manual Transmission for transmission-specific info.

FAQ

Is this manual only for professional mechanics?
No. It is written for anyone who can read a fault code and wants the correct factory interpretation.
What year models does this cover?
This manual covers Cummins Quantum series engines used in various applications from the early 2000s to present. It includes fault codes for QSB, QSC, QSM11, QSK15, QSK19 engines. The document is undated but covers common codes found on engines with Cense and non-Cense systems. Note that codes marked with asterisk are Cense fault codes, as shown on page 42. The manual does not specify exact model years, but the codes apply to the Quantum platform. Always cross-reference with your engine’s serial number and ECM calibration.

Don’t waste time cross-referencing generic OBD2 charts. Get the printed table of fault codes direct from Cummins. Access the Factory Manual.
