Tune-Up Kits for 25B, 30E, 400 Models

Each engine brake model has its own tune-up kit. The manual lists them by OEM part number so there’s no cross-referencing mystery. For the 25B, 30/30E, 400, and 400H, the kit is 3871418. The 401A/401B/401C take 3871535. The 420 and 425 share 3871536. Notice the 425A uses 3871537 – different from the 425 base. That kind of distinction gets lost in aftermarket summaries. The manual also includes an upgrade kit (3871513) to convert a 404B to a 404BG with guideless crossheads. If you’re doing that swap, you need the correct part numbers for the crossheads and lash caps. This manual gives them.

What Adjustment Gauges Do You Need?

Getting the lash wrong on a Jacobs brake means either no braking or a bent pushrod. The manual lists twelve different adjustment gauges, from 0.015″ up to 0.090″. Each gauge has its own part number. 3871428 for 0.015″. 3871272 for 0.018″. 3871435 for 0.021″. It goes on. If you’re working on a 490 or 490A, you need the 0.090″ gauge (3163681). Trying to set a 0.015″ clearance with a feeler gauge that’s off spec will cost you – the manual gives you the real tool numbers so you order the right piece.

One of the service tools listed is the slave piston removal tool (3871654). Without it, pulling a stuck slave piston can damage the housing. The oil pressure test kit (3871551) is also listed. If you’re diagnosing a brake that won’t engage, you run that test before you pull the valve cover. The manual doesn’t let you skip diagnostics.

Identify the Correct Application for 401A/401B/401C

The 401A/401B/401C series are common in industrial and marine setups, but they use different tune-up kits than the 400 series. The manual clearly separates them. If you have a 401C with a Jacobs C Brake, the tune-up kit is 3871535. The slave piston removal tool is the same across many models, but the adjustment gauges vary by engine model. Using a 0.018″ gauge on a 401C when it needs 0.015″ will leave the brake partially engaged. The manual’s application table removes that guesswork.

Slave Piston Removal: When You Need Tool 3871654

If a slave piston hangs up, you’ll need the removal tool (3871654) to extract it without scoring the bore. The manual tells you when to use it and how. Same with the grinding gauge for the 425A (3871221) – that’s for exhaust rockers on pre-1980 engines. You won’t find that level of detail in a generic manual because they don’t track year-specific changes. This one does.

Why OEM Documentation Beats Aftermarket

I’ve seen techs rely on third-party manuals that list a generic torque spec for all brake bolts. That’s how you snap a housing bolt. This is a Cummins factory document – the same one dealer techs use. The part numbers are OEM, the adjustment specs are OEM, and the application data comes from Cummins’ own engineering records. There’s no “interpretation” layer.
