BMW 325i 1995 electrical troubleshooting manual cover showing E36 wiring diagrams

Let me save you a headache. I’ve pulled more burned-up instrument clusters out of E36s than I care to count, and nine times out of ten it’s because some guy used a generic aftermarket wiring diagram. This thing—the BMW 325i, 318i, 320i, 318s, 318c 1995 Electrical Schematic—is the exact same binder the dealer techs had in the 90s. 436 pages, printed by BMW NA, part number 01 00 1 469 491. If you’re chasing a short, a no-start, or an ABS light that won’t clear, you need this. Not a reprint from a third party that inverted the wire colors. This.

Engine Control System Schematics: M42 and M50

Section 1210.9 covers the DME M1.7 for the 4-cylinder M42 engine found in the 318i and 318s. Section 1210.10 walks through the MS40 for the 6-cylinder M50 used in the 320i and 325i. Page 2 of the manual shows the full index—every solenoid, sensor, and relay mapped to a diagram. Need the crank position sensor pinout? It’s in there. The fuel injector firing order? Printed, not guessed. You get the factory splice locations and connector views too, which is the difference between spending twenty minutes with a test light or swapping a $400 ECU that wasn’t broken.

Power Distribution and Ground Distribution

Section 0670.0 starts with the power distribution chart—fuse block, battery junction box, everything. Then 0670.1 gives you the fuse chart so you know which fuse feeds the OBD port versus the DME main relay. Ground distribution is section 0670.4. I’ve seen ground straps on these cars look like rusted coat hangers; the manual shows you exactly which ground point (G200, G300, etc.) is for the engine management. If you’re swapping a motor or chasing intermittent electrical gremlins, those are the first things to check. Don’t start pulling harnesses until you look at the factory ground layout.

How the Charging System Is Wired

Section 1230.0 diagrams the alternator and voltage regulator circuits. The E36 charging system is simple but picky—wrong sense wire voltage and you’ll overcharge the battery. This schematic gives you the exact wire gauge, terminal numbers, and connector pinouts. Pair it with a good multimeter and you can diagnose a bad diode pack in ten minutes. Also covers the starter circuit in section 1240.0—start relay, ignition switch, clutch switch (if equipped). No guesswork.

Why OEM Electrical Schematics Beat Aftermarket Every Time

Every aftermarket book I’ve seen for these cars gets the wire colors wrong on at least one circuit. The M42 idle control valve is a classic example—two wires, but the colors swap depending on build date. The factory manual accounts for that because it’s written from the actual production line data. Plus, aftermarket manuals often skip the splice location views (section 8000.0) and the connector views (section 8500.0). Those are the pages that show you which pin in the 20-pin connector goes to the EWS module. Without them, you’re backprobing blindly. Save yourself the swearing.

Supplemental Restraint and ABS: Don’t Guess

Section 3234.0 covers the airbag system. If you’re messing with the SRS wiring, you have to disconnect the battery and wait two minutes—that’s in the manual’s introduction, section 0110.0. The ABS hydraulic unit and wheel speed sensor wiring are in sections 3450.0 and 3450.1. These aren’t circuits to experiment on. One wrong jumper and you’ll set off a bag or lock up a brake. The factory schematic gives you the exact pin numbers and resistor values for the crash sensor. Follow it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this manual cover the 1994 models?
No. It covers vehicles produced from 9/94 onward.
What if I need the wiring for the convertible top?
Go to section 5430.0 – Electro-Mechanical Convertible Top. That section includes the hydraulic pump relay, top position switches, and the microswitch wiring. The component location views on page 7100.0 show exactly where each motor lives. You’ll also find the connector views for the top control module.
Is this a reprint or scanned copy?
OEM scan from BMW NA, part number 01 00 1 469 491.
How many pages? Does it include component locations?
436 pages. Includes component location chart (7000.0), location views (7100.0), splice location views (8000.0), and connector views (8500.0). That’s all the corner case stuff aftermarket books leave out. If you’re rewiring a wrecked 318c, those splice locations save hours.

You’ve read enough. If you work on these cars, you need the real factory document. Click below to Access the Factory Manual. Your multimeter will thank you.
