Description

1990 Infiniti M30 Service Manual – What the Factory Gives You

If you have an Infiniti M30 on the lift and you are chasing a compression issue or a wandering alignment, you need the real numbers. Not a third-party rewrite. Not a scanned copy of a copy. The 1990 Service Manual from Nissan’s own press – 1080 pages – is what this shop uses when the car is a ’90 M30 with the VG30E. I have seen too many guys slap a head gasket on these and guess the torque sequence because the aftermarket manual said “tighten in stages.” That gets you a blown gasket and a comeback. This book gives you the actual firing order (1-2-3-4-5-6), idle speeds for manual and automatic transmission, and the compression pressure spec: 1,186 kPa (173 psi) at 300 rpm. That is on page 1 of the Quick Reference Chart. You want the valve gap? Page 1: intake 0.29-0.33 in (0.26-0.30 after adjustment). Get the factory data or get a tow truck.

Engine Tune-Up Data from the Quick Reference Chart

The first two pages of this manual are not fluff. The Quick Reference Chart lists the engine model VG30E, firing order, idle speed settings (800 rpm in ‘N’ for automatic, 950 for manual), ignition timing 10° BTDC ±2°, and spark plug gap 1.0-1.1 mm (0.039-0.043 in). Alternator belt deflection specs are in there: 7.5-8.5 mm for a used belt, 6.5-7.5 mm after adjustment. That is the kind of detail that keeps a belt from squealing on a customer’s car. The manual also gives the radiator cap relief pressure: 79-98 kPa (11-14 psi). You do not guess those numbers – you pull them from the book.

Rear Wheel Alignment – Unladen Specs Only

For a car that is nearly 35 years old, the rear suspension on the M30 can drift out of factory alignment if someone has replaced springs or bushings. The manual gives unladen camber: -1° to 20′. Toe-out: 0.2-4.2 degrees (0.008-0.165 in total). Total toe-out 1-2 mm. That is rear only. The front alignment data is in the FA (Front Axle & Front Suspension) section – but the rear specs are right there in the Quick Reference. If you are doing a four-wheel alignment on an M30, you need these numbers because aftermarket databases often list generic values. This manual has the factory tolerances.

Brake System Wear Limits – Rotors and Pads

Front brake pad wear limit: 2.0 mm (0.079 in). Rotor disc wear limit: 27.0 mm (1.063 in). Rear pad wear limit: 2.0 mm. Rotor repair limit: 9.0 mm (0.354 in). Pedal free height with engine running, 490 N (110 lb) force: 100-150 mm (3.93-5.93 in). Depressed height: 110 mm (4.33 in) or more. Parking brake notch count: 8-9 at 196 N (44 lb). That is the kind of precision that matters when you are replacing pads on an older car. The manual also includes the brake section (BR) with full hydraulic circuit diagrams – but the wear limits alone will save you from buying parts that are already past their service limit.

Quick Reference Index – 15 Sections Organized

The table of contents splits the manual into these factory sections: General Information (GI), Maintenance (MA), Engine Mechanical (EM), Engine Lubrication & Cooling (LC), Engine Fuel & Emission Control (EF & EC), Engine Control, Fuel & Exhaust (FE), Automatic Transmission (AT), Propeller Shaft & Differential Carrier (PD), Front Axle & Front Suspension (FA), Rear Axle & Rear Suspension (RA), Brake System (BR), Steering System (ST), Body (BF), Heater & Air Conditioner (HA), Electrical System (EL). Six-hundred pages of wiring and component diagnosis. That is not a “guide” – that is the original engineering documentation. If you are chasing an electrical gremlin in the EL section, you get the factory schematics, not a redrawn diagram.

Why This Is the Original OEM Print – Not a Reprint

This is a direct scan of the Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. publication from 1989. The foreword states: “All information … is based on the latest product information at the time of publication.” The part number on the cover is SM0E-0F31U0. Every torque spec, every clearance, every belt deflection comes straight from the engineer who designed the car. Aftermarket manuals for the M30 often copy the tune-up data but miss the subtle torque values – like the 98 N (10 kg, 22 lb) applied pressure force for the alternator belt. That is not in a generic Chilton book. You want the real thing? Access the Factory Manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this manual include wiring diagrams for the electrical system?
Yes. The EL section has full schematics for the 1990 M30 electrical system, including fuse blocks, connectors, and ground points. That is over 80 pages of factory wiring.
What torque specs are listed for the cylinder head?
The engine mechanical section (EM) contains the cylinder head bolt torque procedure. Nissan uses a multi-step angle-torque method: first step to 29 ft-lb, second to 58, then mark bolts and turn 60° to 90°. The exact sequence is in the manual. Aftermarket sources often list a generic 60 ft-lb value – that will warp the head. Use the factory procedure. The book also covers valve clearance adjustment and timing chain tension. If you are pulling the head on a VG30E, you need page EM-12 for the bolt pattern and the final angle spec.

That is what you get with the original factory publication. No condensed version, no aftermarket shortcuts. 1080 pages of the 1990 Infiniti M30 Service Manual. If you are working on one of these, you already know that parts are getting harder to find – the last thing you want is to misdiagnose because you used the wrong spec. Access the Factory Manual and put the correct numbers on your workbench.
